Stephanie and Family,
I just learned of Simon’s passing. I remember you both very well from your time in Corner Brook. Thoughts, prayers and condolences at this difficult time. Stay strong.

Stephanie, Emma and Ben, it feels like eons since I’ve seen either of you. I don’t have a single bad memory of your family, though! I recall only fun and laughter when our families were together. To hear of Simon’s passing is sad news, indeed. Grieve as you must, so must we all, but I hope you’re left with only the happy memories of him as I have of all of you. You’re all in my thoughts, take good care.

HI Stephanie and family
We were saddened to hear of Simon’s passing. We knew it was coming but when we spoke to him in mid November he sounded like the regular Simon. I still vividly recall the day I first met Simon at the Stephenville airport when he met me for an interview for a position at Grenfell College in February 1981. He wore a green anorak with a copy of the Canadian Geographer under his arm–as I recall it had been a warm winter and he mentioned that the snow normally would be piled high as we drove into Corner Brook and up to the college. We had some great times in Corner Brook --we still remember that hilarious surprise birthday party for Simon (for his 50th) with Liz Smallwood writhing on the floor pretending to be a lobster and Judge Soper passing the orange under his neck to Evie Newton? We enjoyed our dinner parties together and outings to the Green Garden trail and on the ski trails. Later after you moved to Calgary we appreciated it when Simon got us at the Calgary airport to stay with you on various occasions. We also appreciated the help you gave Michael when he came to Calgary and you accommodated him for several days while he found a job and place to stay. Simon had a kind ,thoughtful demeanor and our thoughts are with you and your family.
Much Love

I worked with Simon on the Bar U Ranch national historic site in the 1990s and always enjoyed his quiet humour and relied on his knowledge of the ranching industry. I especially remember a conference on ranching history in which he began by explaining that he was not an historian but only a poor geographer and then delivered an insightful and humourous paper on ranching history. I am sorry to learn of his passing and offer my condolences to his family.
