Obituary of Judy DUNSMORE

January 18, 1940 – St. Stephen, New Brunswick

December 9, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Despite a valiant five-week battle, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of Judy Dunsmore of Calgary, AB, on Monday, December 9, 2019 at the age of 79 years from complications due to recent cardiac illness.

Judy was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick and was the seventh child of eleven children born to Mary Christine Egan and William James McGuire.  She graduated from McAdam High at the top of her class and went on to study Nursing in 1960 at St Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Saint John, New Brunswick. She became a nurse extraordinaire and cared for people, mostly children, for over forty years in Mt. Sinai Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio; Montreal Children’s Hospital; Victoria Hospital, London, Ontario; The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario; and Alberta Children’s Hospital, Calgary, Alberta. Judy celebrated many patients she nursed as children and we all came to know them by name. In 1983 Judy met the love of her life, Alan Dunsmore. They later married in Saint John and lived a social and active life in Calgary. They enjoyed the outdoors by golfing and hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. Judy was a skilled downhill skier earning her the fond nickname ‘Grandma Powder’ from Sam and Max.  Judy and Alan enjoyed their trips to New Zealand, Ireland, Hawaii, England, as well as Judy’s treasured Maritimes and they shared nineteen winters in Arizona where they met more dear friends. Judy also travelled extensively with close friends including trips to France, Italy, Africa and Israel.

Judy was a diligent volunteer with many organizations including Hospice Calgary, Kids with Cancer, Catholic Women’s League and Foothills Hospital Spiritual Care. She will be remembered for her fun personality, easy laughter and love of God and family.

She will be forever remembered and terribly missed by her siblings, George McGuire (Gaye); Sr. Doreen McGuire; Leo McGuire (Jeannette); Sheila McGuire; and Gerry McGuire (Sybil); and her sisters-in-law, Barb McGuire and Betty McGuire.  She was also cherished by many nieces and nephews and numerous dear friends. Judy was predeceased by her husband Alan Dunsmore and her siblings and their spouses, Billy McGuire (Barb); Betty Hayter (Jim); Raymond McGuire; Patty Reid (Bill); and Pat McGuire. Alan’s children Darren Dunsmore (Clara Villegas) and Lori Dunsmore (Neil Smith) together with Judy’s grandsons Michael Dunsmore, Garett Dunsmore, Sam Smith and Max Smith unite with the McGuire family and friends in sorrow.
