Obituary of Merlyn “Dewey” THOMPSON

August 2, 1931 – Ogema, Saskatchewan
December 8, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Dewey Thompson of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the age of 88 years.

Dewey was born on a farm one and a half miles outside Ogema, SK. As a young man, he enjoyed helping on his dad’s wheat farm and raising a fine heard of cattle. At fourteen years of age, he ordered a custom saddle out of a catalog from the general store and often went saddle bronc riding, sometimes with his cousin. He came to AB in 1956 with Trans Provincial Drilling and worked seismic, water well drilling and coal testing. Dewey married Laraine in Calgary on February 15, 1969. The last five years of his work life he worked for the AB government until he was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. He enjoyed road trips including driving Canada, the United States and Mexico, he loved flying small airplanes, receiving his solo pilots licence at Spring Bank Airport. Dewey always loved fishing and camping with his family in the Kanananskis and Chain Lakes. Dewey was always known to be a man of his word, and he will be dearly missed.

Besides his loving wife Laraine of fifty years, Dewey is survived by his daughter, Debbie (Myles) Leonard, son Ryan Thompson, grandkids, Tracy (Jeremy) Dueck, Tyler (Samantha) Leonard, Braxton Thompson, and Carter Thompson; great-grandsons, Austin and Lachlan; sister Ruby Hood, and niece Sandra Zulliani. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Ruth Thompson and son Rex.
