Obituary of Patricia Hazel YOUNG (nee Miller)

January 4, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Patricia Hazel Young, beloved wife of Rick Young, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the age of 79 years.

Pat was the first of her five surviving siblings, Cathy Ellis, Marie Armstrong, and George, Jason and Bruce Miller, all of Ontario.  During the war years, her parents, Cecil and Lilias Miller, lived in several mining camps in Ontario and Quebec.  Pat started school in Noranda, Quebec, then moved to Crystal Beach, Ontario, until her family moved to Niagara Falls where she completed high school. After obtaining a teaching diploma from Hamilton Teacher’s College, Pat taught children in elementary grades with great compassion, dedication and enthusiasm, starting in Niagara Falls, then in Montreal, and eventually in Calgary, after obtaining a B.Ed. at University of Calgary.  She married Rick in 1963, and raised two children, Conan (Avery) and Natalie (Barry Yee).  After retiring from teaching in 1995, she became an outdoor enthusiast, learned to play golf, and got involved with the Second Sixties Outdoor Club, of which she is an Honorary Life Member.  Hiking, snowshoeing, cycling, walking, traveling, reading, cuddling with her cats and being with friends were her passions in retired life.  

People loved Pat for her friendly and modest demeanour, honesty, practical wisdom, and love of kibitzing and laughter.  She will be sorely missed by her family, circle of friends, the Christian Science Church, and fellow outdoor club members.
 
An informal Celebration of Life event for Pat will be held between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Panorama Room, Edgemont Community Association, 33 Edgevalley Circle NW, Calgary.  Photos and mementos of her life and activities will be on display, and light snacks and beverages will be available.
