Obituary of Walter Nicholas BRADEN

February 16, 1932 – Tuberose, Saskatchewan
January 1, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Walter Nicholas Braden, beloved husband of Marilyn Braden (nee Mann) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at the age of 87 years.

Walter was born to Anna and Nick Kwasnicy of Tuberose, SK. Gratitude was often expressed for having grown up close to nature on the Foreman’s farm in Saskatchewan.

At the age of 11, Walter’s love for the violin began, which led to Music Awards, and the Royal Conservatory of Music Medal. Studies continued with Clayton Hare who started the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in 1949, along with a summer at the Banff School of Fine Arts.

Losing his father in a tragic farm accident at 19, Walter and his mother moved to Saskatoon, SK, where he received a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Saskatchewan. A move to Calgary followed, and he was employed by Amoco. While completing his Bachelor of Education degree, Walter met and fell in love with Marilyn Mann. Their marriage in 1968 resulted in a fifty-one year union, and it was with much joy they welcomed daughter Heather to their family. She and her dad shared a talent and love for the violin. The value of education instilled in him by his parents led him to complete a Master of Arts in Sociology, which culminated in a teaching career with the Calgary Board of Education. Walter was a lifelong learner, especially of subjects regarding investments and the law. His interests included classical music, healthy living, trips to the mountains, and excursions with Marilyn both abroad, and to visit Heather.

Walter treasured his family, sharing his gifts of kindness, gentleness, thoughtfulness, and playfulness. Above all, we were blessed by his quiet love, a love that did not call attention to himself. Walter’s influence leaves a lasting legacy and his presence will be forever missed.

We are deeply grateful to cardiologist Dr. M. Curtis, and GP Dr. F. Khan.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
