Obituary of Ivan Jose CEGARRA

December 15, 1943 – Valera, Venezuela

January 7, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Ivan Cegarra, beloved husband of Maria Antonieta Cegarra (nee Torres) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2020 at the age of 76 years.

Ivan was born in Valera, Venezuela on December 15, 1943. He moved to Maracaibo in 1951. He immigrated to Canada in 1998.  He married Maria Antonieta Torres in 1965 and graduated from the University Of Zulia with a degree in Dr. in Veterinary sciences in 1969. He was a Professor of Anatomy and Histology in the University of Zulia (LUZ), member of the Association of professors of the University of Zulia (APUZ), and was the president of this Organization for a few years. Ivan accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of all the students he formed into professionals and the museum of Anatomy in UCLA University and The lab of Histology in LUZ that bear his name. He loved traveling, specially going to the beach, singing, cooking, learn about the places and people where he traveled, and enjoying life.

Ivan’s most memorable vacation was when they went to Japan; they really enjoyed the sightseeing, the culture and specially the food! Ivan’s favourite poem was “En Paz” of Amado Nervo and his favorite phrases were “Las cosas hay que esperar que lleguen” and “ya me puedo ir, ya hice todo lo que venia a hacer”. He will be most remembered for his kindness and good heart.

Besides his loving wife, Ivan is survived by his three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ivan Raymundo, Ivar Leonardo, Ivan Eduardo, Luisa Alvarez and Lilian Villanueva; and his grandchildren, David Alejandro, Ivan Alejandro, Maria Laura, Valeria Maria, Ivar Adolfo, Victoria Maria and Ivan Andres; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Jubilee Room.
