Obituary of George McGOVERN

George McGovern of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the age of 66 years.

George was born in Spirit River, AB on March 31, 1953. His childhood was spent in the Grand Prairie area with his two sisters and a brother. After a brief stint in the army he settled down and married. He and his family moved to Calgary, AB in 1989.

George was married to Marla Matson from 1975 to 1995 and they have four children. George experienced a number of vocations including auto mechanic, grain buyer and oilfield crew lead. After the downturn of the 80’s he re-trained and worked as an accountant in Calgary.

George was blessed with a charming and likeable disposition and could make a friend with anyone. He enjoyed the outdoors, horses, fishing, hunting and camping with his kids. He loved 60’s rock and the Irish Rovers and loved to listen to his LP collection and tell the grands about the songs and the groups. He will be most remembered for his easy manner and happy-go-lucky personality.

George is survived by his son Patrick McGovern (Sheri) of Devon, AB, and three daughters, Wendy (Jeff) Browning of Calgary, Dorothy Simard of Okotoks, and Tia McGovern (Jonathan) of Calgary; and grandchildren, James, Dylan, Dakota, Emery, Jessa, Marshall, Oliver, Alexander and Aria.  He is also survived by Irlene (Andy) Marple of Dawson Creek, BC, Yvonne Willard of Grande Prairie, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

George was predeceased by his mother, Giselle, father, Alex; his brother and sister-in-law, Fred & Linda McGovern.

Family viewing will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY Deerfoot South (12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.

A luncheon will be held at 3250 - 28 Street SW, Calgary, AB on Saturday, January 18, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be an opportunity to share memories and condolences with family and friends.

A wake will be held at Dublin Calling (1637 – 37 Street SW, Calgary, AB) for those who wish to raise a glass in memory of George.
