Condolences
Dear Susan and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Gerry's passing and I offer my condolences to you and your family. I worked for Gerry in the Calgary Deloitte office in the 1980's. He hired me right out of university. In my mind, Gerry was a visionary. He created the Financial & Special Services consulting group - the thinking being that CA's could do more than just audits and tax. He was right. He gave me the opportunity to be one of the first to join the group and was supportive of the group's agenda throughout. That opportunity changed my life. More importantly, as a person I remember his sense of humor, laugh and drive. He also knew when to look you in the eyes and tell you to step it up. One would have been wise to listen.
Gerry played a great part in forming the careers of myself and many of my colleagues. I will always remember him for that. Our prayers are with him and your family at this sad time.
Dear Sue and Family,
Belated condolences from Florida from Barb and I. We were deeply saddened to learn of Gerry's passing. We have fond memories of our Deloitte days and our social get togethers. A fun winter gathering with you and Gerry and the Meredith''s and Gerrard's at your parent's cottage instantly comes to mind. I particularly remember travelling to England with Gerry for a client meeting and being diverted to Germany and later stranded on the wrong side of the English Channel as England was enveloped with one of their last "pea soup" fogs that grounded all flights. I was proud to be his Deloitte Partner. We are sorry that we lost touch with the two of you after your move to Calgary but I was always kept right up to date by Drew and Peter which when shared with Barb would cause us to reminisce about our experiences together. So the two of you have never been far from our thoughts. As we still live in the Beach we frequently drive by your parents' home which brings to mind fond memories of both of you.
Our thoughts are with you and your family,
John and Barb Gambles
Ah Sue, My thoughts and prayers are with you. You must be heart-broken. Bridget passed away in January and it is a huge struggle to put your new life together knowing it can never match the wonderful time that you had together. However life goes on and you have to do your best, particularly to support your family who are grieving the loss of a wonderful father.
Gerry and I were kindred spirits. Work hard but always remember that life is to be enjoyed and your primary focus is always your family. We worked on a lot of jobs together and when we were working downtown we often celebrated on Fridays with a couple of pints at the local pub with the guys.[Honest, Sue, generally only a couple of pints.] Although one guy reported that once when he got on the subway to go home he found one of the guys [ who shall be nameless but you'll probably guess who] who had left earlier, curled up fast asleep, having gone round the complete circuit of the subway.
I knew Gerry had come by his sense of humour honestly, being of Scottish extraction, but I hadn't realized both his parents were born in Scotland. I wouldn't have let him get away with that.
It's appropriate that I finish these few words about Gerry with a smile on my face as that's how 'll always remember him. Martin
Gerry hired me in 1997 to be Controller of Sunwing Energy, part of the Ivanhoe group of companies. That started the last and best 17 years of my career and I always had Gerry in my thoughts. Together we had many trips to California on business. One especially I remember when on a weekend reprieve from work we drove to Yosemite National Park. Susan joined us and the three of us had a grand time touring the forests and mountains. It was literally a week ago I was going through my old pictures and came across the ones I took of that trip, which brought back such fond memories.
My heartfelt condolences to Susan and family. Gerry was a great guy.
