Obituary of Mavis Mildred HILL

Mavis Mildred Hill of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at the age of 79 years.

Mavis (McDowell) Hill was born in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan on May 30, 1940 and grew up on the family farm. Mavis was involved in the local 4H club and enjoyed track and field at school. She moved to Winnipeg in Grade 10 to continue her education, where she met many lifelong friends.  Mavis worked as a nurse’s aid in Moose Jaw before moving to Regina to work in an optometrist office.  This is where she met Dave, who whisked her away from the Prairies to live in Mexico, which remained close to Mavis’ heart for the rest of her life. They welcomed daughters Nicola and Amanda in 1968 and daughter Maureen in 1971.Friends of her girls were always welcomed at her home with open arms and food. Mavis was an excellent cook who always put on a beautiful spread for friends and family. Her legacy includes three daughters who never feel a family meal is complete without at least four side dishes.

Mavis was predeceased by her husband David Hill, her parents, Jim and Mildred McDowell; and her sister-in-law Betty McDowell. Mavis is survived by her brothers, Doug and Grant (Donna) and sister Janice (Gerald), and Tom Keenan (Heather) and their families. Mavis will be dearly missed by her children and sons-in-law, Nicola (Brian), Amanda (Dave) and Maureen (Blake); and her grandchildren Delaney and Fiona O’Flaherty, Sam and Jim Chakravorty, and Avery and Alice Horobin.

Everyone who knew Mavis is welcome to attend a Celebration of her Life at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at 10:00 am.
