Obituary of Edward Leon MATTERN

April 20, 1942 – January 22, 2020

 Calgary, Alberta

Edward Leon Mattern passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at the age of 77 years. Edward was born on April 20, 1942 in Calgary, Alberta where he resided his entire life.

After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, Edward worked as an orderly at the Colonel Belcher Veterans Hospital until he transferred to the Purchasing Department of the Department of Veterans Affairs. He then moved on to a successful sales career with The Prudential Insurance Company. He decided to make a bold career move selling Farm Insurance while travelling within Alberta. The difficulty of working away from home proved to be quite challenging, prompting him to join the sales team at Sears, a position he enjoyed. After leaving Sears, Ed started working with his brother Frank as an Electricians helper where he decided to become an electrician until he retired. He was a long-time member of the I.B.E.W. 

 He was a long-standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #1 since 1976 where he enjoyed playing darts, pool and snooker. He particularly liked entering in Snooker tournaments and often did quite well.

Ed was a very avid reader, a constant learner and an all-around knowledge seeker.  

He loved playing cards and was an exceptional crib player. His keen mind and competitive nature made him very hard to beat!  

Ed lived life to the fullest and had a very kind, and open heart. He was a loyal friend and valued spending time with his family; we will all miss him very much.

Ed is survived by Norma, and their children, Jett Nyx (Amy) from London, England, Melanie Robson (Duane) and Tammy Lane (Gordon) all from Calgary, Alberta.

Their grandchildren; Jordan Nyx from London, England, Tianna Lane, Adam Lane, Megan Robson and Haley Robson all from Calgary, Alberta. 

Ed is also survived by his brother Kim (Pat) from Calgary, Alberta, Nephews Matthew and Brandyn and Nieces Adele, Sherry and Michelle as well as several great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and numerous friends.

Ed was predeceased by his parents; Leo (1996) and Anne (2010), son John (January 31, 1985), brother Frank and sister-in-law Carol (March 2012) and nephews Trent (November 2004) and most recently Michael (January 20, 2020)

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, February 9th, 2020 from 2p.m. to 4p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
