Obituary of Ruth Dorothy PLATO

May 21, 1929 – Leader, Alberta

January 27, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

On January 27, 2020 Ruth Dorothy Plato entered into Heaven and was welcomed by her father Ewalt, mother Bertha, sister Erma, and brothers Duff and Charlie.

Born in Leader, SK, May 21, 1929 Ruth was confirmed in the Lutheran church at the age of thirteen together with her sister Erma. After graduating from Winnipeg Bible college with a bachelor’s degree in Religion, she lived and worked in Winnipeg. After five years, she rejoined her parents in Edmonton where she attended the University of Alberta and received her Bachelor of Education in Home Economics. In 1976 she moved to Calgary to begin her teaching career. She was considered an outstanding clothing and textile instructor. This culminated in a yearly public fashion show that was the highlight of the year for many students. Ruth was a lifelong member of the Christian church. She practiced her beliefs faithfully and supported charities all over the world.

Ruth will be lovingly missed by her sisters, Shirley Plato and Bernie Kahanoff, who for the duration of Ruth’s life were her confidantes; and by her brother-in-law Al Kahanoff, who cooked her dinner regularly throughout her life, and who visited her every week in the last few years. Ruth loved Al dearly, and not just because his visits were always accompanied by an ice cream cone or Werther’s candies.  Her nieces Sharon Kahanoff, Tanya Kahanoff and Chelsea McGivern will also miss her deeply. While Ruth had no children of her own, she and her best friend, Minnie, took care of them every weekend when they were young. In the waning years of her life, they returned her care, tending to her needs with love and dedication. Her joyful presence will be missed by all three of them and by her favourite grandnephews, Emerson Kahanoff and Elliot Bobinski, who returned her joy with bubbly love. Ruth will also be missed by her out-of-town relatives, her sister-in-law Sue Plato; her nieces, Debbie Plato (Immo Sintenis) and Brenda Constable (David); and her nephew Jeff Plato (Cheryl Leia). In Italy, where Ruth visited several times, (her sister Erma moved there at the age of twenty), she will be missed by her nieces, Shirley Simonini (Claudio), Gloria Wiens Pieri (Mario); and her nephew Dan Wiens (Angela). Ruth will also be missed by her life-long friend Minnie Stroschein
