Michael Scott Mattern of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Monday, January 20, 2020 at the age of 43 years.

Mike was born in Calgary, AB, alongside his twin, Michelle on February 17, 1976. After graduating High School from Lord Shawnessy in 1994, Mike went to work for Productive Space, gaining experience in corporate office moves. He then went on to a transport career where he was responsible for driving large motorhomes across country. He was particularly proud of his ability to drive all sizes of recreational vehicles, on the worst possible roads, and in various weather conditions. He later moved to a forklift operator position with Sobeys’ warehouse, but his most favourite work/ passion was creating large, artistic window designs for various companies during special events such as the Calgary Stampede.

Mike liked to live an active lifestyle. He loved to go hiking, cycling and camping. He really enjoyed sitting around a campfire, making

S’mores, reminiscing about favourite family trips and having fun!  His most memorable vacation was when he visited California with his family and decided to create his own fireworks display! Mike had a great sense of humour and playful nature; he never missed an opportunity for an adventure. Michael also loved getting up early to watch the news and make his daily phone calls to check in on the family.

Mike had a kind and gentle heart. He had a great love and pride for all of his family and was very proud to be ‘Cool Uncle Mike’ for his niece, Amanda McCallum (Thomas McCallum); nephews Kody Mattern, Alexander McAllister, Landon McAllister; grand-nieces Cheyanne McCallum, Adalynn McCallum; and grand-nephews Caleb and Noah McCallum.

Mike is also survived by three loving sisters, Adele Mattern (Tyler Kroeker) of Calgary, Sherry McAllister (Don McAllister) of California, and twin Michelle Mattern;  cousins, Tammy, Melanie, Jett, Sara, Brandyn, Matthew, Brittany, and Amber; aunts, Norma, Sheila, Cindy; and uncle Kim and Rob. Mike was predeceased by his mother and father, Carol and Frank Mattern of Calgary; brother Trent Mattern of Calgary; cousin John; and uncles Jim and Edward who sadly passed away on January 22, 2020.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, February 9, 2020 from 2:00 p.m.to 4:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. There will be a reception to follow at the Funeral Home.
