Obituary of Ian William MacKay

May 25, 1935 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
February 11, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Ian William MacKay of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at the age of 84 years.

Ian MacKay was born in Winnipeg, MB, where he attended school and graduated in 1953. He was an avid sports fan playing competitive hockey and football. He married Shirley Glover and moved to Calgary, where they had two sons in the early 60s: Kevin (Goose) and Russ (Lumpy). He was an involved father, especially when it came to teaching and coaching his sons hockey, baseball and soccer.
Ian worked at a variety of companies in his life, served with Kiwanis in High River and was a supporter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation in his retirement years. Although he and Shirley divorced, he enjoyed staying connected with immediate and extended family.

Sports were a big part of his life and the TV always had a game on. God bless his favourite football team, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for winning the Grey Cup in 2019, Go Bombers!!

Ian spent his final years at The Edgemont, a seniors facility in Calgary. Thank you to all staff who supported and cared for him. He always seemed to have a chocolate for those who stopped by.

He is survived by his sons, Kevin (Lori) and Russ (Karen), and their children Ben and Taylor; his sister Margaret, and nieces and nephews, Jenny, Roger, David, Patti, Debbie, Mona, Brenda, Janice, Dawn, Bruce, Doug, Dave, Ken, Jodie, and Karen.

He will be missed but the memories will live on. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Ian’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
