Obituary of Barry Wayne HARRISON

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barry Wayne Harrison, beloved husband of 58 years to Linda Harrison of Calgary, AB, on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the age of 79 years. Barry passed peacefully after a short illness and was surrounded by his loving family.

 

Barry was born in Calgary on October 17, 1940. In 1958, he graduated from Crescent Heights High School, and went on to attend Colorado College on a hockey scholarship. Barry would graduate from Colorado College in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Banking, later earning a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1970. Barry completed his articles with the Moore, Lougheed, Atkinson, McMahon, Tingle Law Firm in 1971 where he articled under the Honorable W. Kenneth Moore, QC.

 

Barry practiced law for many years in Calgary, concentrating in the areas of oil and gas, corporate finance and securities law.  He was managing partner for Code Hunter LLP when he retired from practice in 1993.  Barry was also a Corporate Director and independent businessman holding executive positions in various corporations over 40 years.  These included serving as Chairman, Director or President of several intermediate or junior oil and gas companies doing business in Canada, the United States, Germany, the North Sea and Russia. Most recently, Barry held a corporate directorship with Encana Corporation and was Chairman and Director of Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company and its related companies operating in the United States and Canada. 

 

Throughout Barry’s career, he held many non-profit sector affiliations including board positions at Mount Royal University, Strathcona Tweedsmuir School and the Dean’s Advisory Committee for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary.  Barry also had a long standing relationship with the Calgary Stampede holding Director positions with the Rodeo Committee and Pension Board for many years.

 

Besides his loving wife Linda Harrison, Barry is survived by his four treasured  children, David, Brenda, Cheryl (Scott Doyle) and Russell (Chihiro Uki); his seven devoted grandchildren, Erin, Conor, Sol, Stara, Ethan, Zachary and Jude.  Barry is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Rick Cheetham, their children, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Barry was predeceased by his parents Harry and Lenora Harrison of Calgary, AB.

 

Barry will be remembered for his tireless devotion to his family; his kind heart, wisdom and sense of humour. We will dearly miss him.

 

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Monday, February, 24, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
