Obituary of Julia Katherine ZAPFE

October 12, 1922 – Saltz, Saskatchewan

February 20, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Julia Zapfe (nee Beck) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at the age of 97 years.

Julia met the love of her life, Graydon Carl Zapfe, at a dance at the Royal Canadian Legion, in Saskatoon, and they were married on March 01, 1946. Three daughters, Patricia, Linda and Reni were born there, before the Family moved to Thunder Bay Ontario in 1952 (Fort William), where daughter number four, Susan, was born. The Family relocated to Calgary AB in 1963. Julia was employed at the Glencoe Club from 1964 to 1969, as the Dining Room/Banquet Manager, and then at The Holiday Inn Downtown Calgary from 1969 until her Retirement in 1983. Julia and Graydon enjoyed many trips to Hawaii and Las Vegas. Their favorite trip was taking Granddaughter Casey and Grandson Brent to Hawaii with them, when Casey and Brent were sixteen years old. After Julia's retirement, she and Graydon were active Gold Panners throughout Alberta and BC. Although they never struck it rich, they enjoyed the outdoors and the adventures. Many family members were given instruction and shown how to pan gold! Julia also loved her Family and was a devoted Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Friend. Julia also was an avid gardener and enjoyed the occasional trip to the Casino!

Julia is survived by her daughters, Linda Irwin (Doug Robertson) and Susan Sherlock (Allan), both from Calgary, AB; granddaughters, Karene Irwin (Randy Killaby), Jesse Irwin (Jade Stevens) of Calgary, AB, and Stacy Sherlock of British Columbia; grandsons, Brent Hagel (Christy), of Calgary, AB, and Robin Hagel of Edmonton, AB. Julia is also survived by great-granddaughters, Morgan and Jaedyn Irwin, Abigail Hagel, and Kaylee Gabora, all of Calgary, AB, and by her great-grandson Grady Hagel; son-in-law, Keith Hagel (Maggie); half-sisters, Kay of Vancouver, BC and Frances of Logan Lake, BC; and sisters-in-law, Elsie and Brigitta Beck of Saskatoon, SK, and Arlene George (Ted) of Edmonton, AB; and numerous nieces and nephews including, Lynne (Annie) Flett (Norm) of Thunder Bay, ON.

Julia was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Philbinna Beck; her stepfather Tony Schaan, her husband Graydon, daughters, Reni and Patricia; granddaughter Casey (Linda's eldest), brothers, Anthony, Paul and Mike Beck; half-brother Jack, step-brothers, Frank and Ned and step-sister Anna.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens.
