Obituary of Matilda MACNAUGHTON

August 1, 1920 – Duval, Saskatchewan
February 20, 2020 – Okotoks, Alberta

Matilda (Mattie) MacNaughton, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 99 on February 20, 2020. Her life was exemplified by her faith and she is now peacefully resting in the presence of her Lord.

Mattie was born in Duval, Saskatchewan on August 1, 1920 and was the eldest daughter of Alexander and Sophie (nee Shirley) Schaeffer.

Mattie married Leigh in 1941 and they were involved in ministry for over thirty years and served in Smeaton, SK, Vauxhall, AB and Okotoks, AB. She was well suited to be a Pastor’s wife with a phenomenal gift of hospitality.  After retirement from ministry in 1976, Mattie worked retail in Calgary for eleven years.

She will always be remembered for her wonderful gift of making everyone feel welcome with her beautiful smile, compassionate listening and warm hugs.  The family will cherish the memories around “Mom’s” dinner table and still reminisce about her famous potato noodles, cinnamon buns and lemon pies.

In later years Mattie lived at Evergreen Retirement Residence in Calgary and her final move was to Tudor Manor in Okotoks where she enjoyed being close to family.  Her love and prayers will be missed but all are grateful for the many years she spent with us.

She is survived by her daughter, Dolores (Gary), two sons, Lloyd (Pam)and Merlin (Linda); six grandchildren, Roma (Tom), Shanda (Jay), Janay (Shawne), Linsey (Adam), Nicole (Steven), and Joel (Nikayla); and eleven great-grandchildren, Cassie, Natalie, Gina, Brant, Danika, Adessa, Amara, Ella, Max,  Sadie, and Cali.  She is also survived by five siblings: Liz, Flo (Mike), Allen (Brenda), Diane, and Barbara, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Mattie was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Charles “Leigh” MacNaughton in 2002 and her parents and stepmother, Mary; brothers, John, Fred, and Norman; and sister, Minnie.

A Celebration of Mattie’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, February 27,  2020 at 2:00 p.m.  Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
