Obituary of Ellen HANSEN (nee Logsted)

June 5, 1931 – Edmonton, Alberta
February 15, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

On Saturday, February 15, 2020 Ellen Hansen of Calgary, AB, passed away with loving family by her side.  She was 88 years old and is now at peace in the everlasting arms of her Lord after enduring a long struggle with dementia.

Ellen was born in Edmonton to parents Just and Sissa Logsted who had immigrated to Canada from Denmark and farmed near Tofield, AB. As the only member of her family born in Canada she was proud of her Canadian citizenship and her Danish heritage.  Her childhood was cut short after her mother passed away unexpectedly when Ellen was only eleven years old. As her older siblings soon moved away, her father, whom she adored, relied heavily on her to help run the farm while at the same time preparing meals and maintaining the household. From that young age onward through to her final years she lived her life as a selfless, loving and thoughtful person who always put the Lord foremost in her life and others before herself.  Her family was the focus of her life and she was a proud, loving and nurturing mother to her four boys and a devoted wife to her husband Peder, to whom she was married for fifty-five years.  During the latter part of their life Ellen and Peder spent many happy times together camping in their small Trillium trailer and enjoying the natural beauty of Western Canada.  Prior to marrying Peder in 1952, Ellen obtained a teaching certificate from the University of Alberta and briefly taught at a small rural school in Bruderheim, AB, and later as a substitute teacher in Edmonton.

Ellen is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Cynthia Hansen, Michael and Annie Hansen, Paul and Laurie Hansen; daughter-in-law Beverly Hansen; her grandchildren, Thomas, Peter, Kirsten, Amanda, Janelle, Paige; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends whom she all loved.

She was predeceased by her husband Peder Hansen; son Philip Hansen of Red Deer, AB; brother Axel Logsted of Aalborg, Denmark; and sisters, Elsie Skandrup of Tilley, AB, and Grethe Jensen of Standard, AB.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (40 Holmes St, Red Deer, AB) on Monday, May 11, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the church hall.
