Obituary of Marcel George MORIN

September 15, 1930 – Edmonton, Alberta
February 22, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Marcel Morin, beloved husband of Joyce Morin (née Hetherington) of Calgary, Alberta, passed away February 22nd, 2020 at the age of 89 years, two days after their 60th wedding anniversary.

Marcel was born in Edmonton, AB on September 15th, 1930. He was the second of eight children and the oldest son. When Marcel was nine years old they moved to the farm at St. Albert. The farm was on the banks of the Sturgeon River, perfect for swimming, skating, and duck hunting. His school years were filled with family and farm life, singing in the choir and CYO activities. He attended the University of Alberta and graduated in 1954 with a degree in Agriculture. Marcel served as President of the Alberta Institute of Agrologists and on the National Council of the Agricultural Institute of Canada. After graduation, Marcel worked as the farmland assessor for the municipalities of Stony Plain and Westlock. In 1958, he became a sales representative for the Shur-Gain Division of Canada Packers, and he worked there until he retired as Manager of the Calgary plant in 1991. Marcel was a gentle giant who will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour and friendly teasing. He enjoyed travel with Joyce and friends, from cruises to bus tours to fishing trips. He went on several adventure trips with his children, including cycling from Calgary to Vancouver and backpacking in Spain and the Yukon. Marcel had too many interests to list; he loved people, reading, bridge, and the stock market. Running, skiing, swimming, and workouts at the gym kept him fit and active throughout his life. He cherished his nuclear and extended family and never missed a celebration. He loved being Pépère and was adored by his six grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Joyce, Marcel is survived by four children, Suzanne Kear (Russ), Heather Anderson (Keith), Mark Morin, and Stephen Morin (Monique); and six grandchildren, Daniel and Scott Kear, Paul and Spencer Anderson, and Amelie and Ruby Morin. He is also survived by his brother Emile (Lorraine) Morin and sisters, Henriette Morin, Lucille Victoor, Justine (Mitch) Martyna, Madeleine St. Louis, and Louise (Marcel) Lavallée; sister-in-law Mary Hetherington, and brother-in-law Ross Hetherington. Marcel was predeceased by his sister Marie Jarmin and brothers-in-law, Don Hetherington, George Victoor, Herman Jarmin and Normand St. Louis.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 2:00 p.m.  Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
