Lucia, David and Michael, Please accept our most heartfelt condolences on Bill's passing. He was a very fine, interesting and intelligent man and it was always a pleasure to spend time in his company. Our sympathy goes out to you Lucia, and to the rest of the family for your loss. We would be pleased to attend the celebration of his life but unfortunately we have a conflicting engagement. Most sincerely, Maurice and Jean Gaucher
Lucia and family. Susan and I offer our condolences on the passing of your wonderful husband and father, Bill. He was a role model for me.
Dr. Bill Laidlaw was one of the biggest influences in my life. In 1968, early in his academic career, he responded to my request for help as a very young eighteen-year-old, second year chemistry student struggling with the science of quantum mechanics and spectroscopy. He took the time to listen. He was kind, insightful, and helpful. He cared! He encouraged me to persevere and believe in myself. Clearing out old papers recently I found some of my old exam papers that he had marked and re encountered the words of encouragement he had written on them! Eventually, I grew up, developed self-confidence, continued to study and love science, and earned my own PhD in spectroscopy. As I approach 70 myself, I regret that I missed the opportunity in later life to let him know how much he had influenced me and contributed to my life, my successes and my world view. And to thank him.
John (and Susan) Duckett
