Obituary of Maurice Marcel LEHODEY

February 3, 1928 - Shaunavon, Saskatchewan

March 9, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Maurice Marcel Lehodey passed away peacefully on March 9, 2020 at the age of 92.

He was born to Winifred Grace Mary Aird, a daughter of Scottish immigrants, and Maurice Marcel Lehodey, a French immigrant, on February 3, 1928 in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, where he was raised with his sister Isabella. He graduated from Regina Collegiate in 1945 and moved to Devon, Alberta to work for Imperial Oil, where he enjoyed a rewarding career until retirement at age 55. Maurice met his wife Doris (née Nufer) in Edmonton in 1954, where she was attending the University of Alberta. ‘Moe and Doe’ – as they came to be known – married in 1955 and settled in Red Deer, where their children, Dianne, Brian and Bob were all born. The family moved to Calgary in 1974, where Maurice continued his career and planted and maintained the garden at their Stanley Park home with painstaking care over the next 45 years.

He enjoyed simple things – his garden, the outdoors, indulging his sweet tooth, supporting his family and giving back to the community. After retirement he could be found many mornings at the local Tim Hortons with his friends to kick off the day and after that spent most days visiting his children and neighbours offering practical and no-nonsense (often unsolicited) advice on home improvement and gardening. He was an avid skier, golfer and curler, and loved hunting and fishing. He was a devoted and supportive ski parent to not only his own children, but to many others and was generous with his time, continuing to give back to his community as a FIS delegate long after his children ceased competitive skiing.

Maurice had no pretences - he was a truly kind, humble and honest man with a gentle heart. He had a twinkle in his eye and his sense of humour will always be remembered, and missed. His grandchildren observe that for someone who rarely drank, his favourite beer was a free one, his second favourite was a cold one - although no one ever saw him have two. His handshake was his bond because your hand hurt for a week after you shook his. And there was only one kind of pie - Saskatoon berry.

Maurice is survived by his wife Doris, his older sister Isabella, her daughter Gwen, his three children, Dianne (John Amundrud) and their children Kelly and Steven, Brian (Mike Williams) and Bob (Tracy Beaumont) and their children, Sean, Breanne, Marc and Blake.

The family will be having a celebration of Maurice’s life in the days to come at a date and location to be determined. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Maurice’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Maurice Lehodey, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
