Sharon BOYLES

Obituary of Sharon Anne BOYLES

March 1, 1945 – Ottawa, Ontario

April 5, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sharon Boyles, who died at home on the evening of Sunday, April 5, 2020, after a ten-month battle with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Sharon is survived by Keith, her loving husband and protector for fifty-five years (the besotted one); her dearly loved sons, Michael (Andrina) and Kevin (Kelly); and her cherished granddaughters, Kendal and Jadyn; and grandsons, Rory and Spencer. She is also survived by her sisters, Lynn (John), Elaine (Jesus) and Maureen (Ken); and her brother Kevin. Her nieces, Marta, Pilar and Alana; as well as nephews, Matthew and Michael will miss their Aunt Sharon, as will many close and dear friends. She was predeceased by her brother Murray in 2017.

In the early years, Sharon was happy to be a stay at home mom with Mike and Kevin.  As the boys moved into elementary school, Sharon went back to school and obtained both her Home Economics and Education degrees at the University of Saskatchewan.  She then embarked on an eighteen-year teaching career with the Calgary Board of Education. When her granddaughter Kendal arrived on the scene in 1998, both Sharon and Keith decided it would be fun to take early retirement and become more involved in her life and the lives of any future grandchildren. It was a decision she never regretted for the rest of her life. Sharon excelled in this role and became Grandma Sharon to countless friends and their children.

Sharon lived a full and energetic life.  She loved cooking (experimenting with new recipes or getting grandkids to help bake cookies, muffins and buns), sewing, gardening and of course travelling.  But not just any type of travelling.  Not many of us have driven from Edmonton to Acapulco with their husband, two little boys and a tent trailer; nor have many driven across the country to the tip of Newfoundland and back in a Volkswagen camper full of teenagers.  Retirement years gave her wonderful holidays on all of the Hawaiian Islands, and the opportunity to do eight home exchanges in Holland, Germany, England, Ireland, and Florida.

The family would like to thank the Hematology staff at the Tom Baker for all their kind and compassionate care especially oncologists Dr. Savoie, Dr. Geddes and Dr. Shrom.  We need to thank the kind nurses at Palliative Home Care for their support in Sharon’s last days.

At Sharon’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service but she did express a wish for family and friends to come together for a good restaurant meal when circumstances allow. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222.  www.albertacancer.ca/memorial.
