"There was a special place in our mother's heart for daughter-in-law Joy Styles-Kukec (married to Carl), who predeceased Lela by about nine years... they loved their time together and in the latter stages of Joy's daunting journey with ALS, they would sit around and Lela would help Joy with her food (Joy was unable to hold cutlery) and most importantly with a glass of wine... always with huge grins on both their faces.

Joy could also be spotted outdoors with dad helping him barbecue, with mom keeping an eye on them so that they would not sample too much of what was on the grill... and there would be some for the rest of us. Of course it was never a real concern, more of a motherly supervision over the two of them."
