Obituary of Gordon Robert ALLEN

October 12, 1950 – Brandon, Manitoba

April 20, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Gordon Robert Allen, beloved husband of Vivian Allen (nee Hnatiuk) passed away at Southwood Care Centre in Calgary, AB on Monday, April 20, 2020.

He leaves to celebrate his life, his loving wife Vivian, son David, brother Ron (Helene), sister Nancy (Jim), brother-in-law Roger (Judy), and sister-in-law Eunice. Uncle Gordon will be fondly remembered by his nieces, Lindsie, Kelsey, Tami and Jessica; and his nephew Chris.

Gordon was predeceased by his mother Phyllis, father Robert and infant sister Beverly.

Gordon’s early childhood years were spent in Brandon, MB. As his father worked for CP Rail, his family moved from Brandon to Winnipeg to Calgary to Field then to Revelstoke where Gordon completed high school. He joined CP Rail as a machine clerk then transferred to the shop department calling crews in Field, BC. After ten years with CP Rail, as he described it, he then walked across the street and began a thirty one year career with Parks Canada operating heavy equipment for Highways before moving to Trades where he was employed until his retirement in 2006.

A devoted husband and father, Gordon led a rich and fulfilling life. A man of his word, a good gentle man with strong values, he gave selflessly to his family, friends and community. His step was quick, his wit quicker. Well respected for many diverse talents, Gordon loved woodworking, model railroading, home renovating, recycling, getting firewood and gardening. Having studied piano in his younger years, he enjoyed music, theatre and concerts.

In the difficult years following a stroke in 2011, Gordon retained his sense of humor and fought tirelessly even in the face of declining health. His courage to overcome day to day struggles with dignity was an inspiration to all who knew him.

A Private Family Service will be held this summer and a Celebration of Gordon’s Life will be scheduled for a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Gordon’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

For their dedicated care and compassion, Gordon’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Han and nursing and healthcare staff on both Parkland and Evergreen Units at Southwood Care Centre.
