Condolences
Susan Margaret Walters was born in Newcastle, Australia on 9 June 1942. She attended St Joseph's Primary School, Merewether between 1947 and 1953, then St Joseph's Girls' High School 1954-1958. I met Susan when I joined her Year 6 class in 1953 and we became good friends. Susan had a cheery nature and was a good student. She stood out in a crowd with her mass of long golden ringlets, one of which she cut off to give to an admiring classmate, Angela. I think those ringlets were all cut off by 1956, revealing lovely curls instead. Susan was a very attractive young lady, a loving only child with devoted parents, a loyal friend. We attended High School together and both graduated from Newcastle Teachers' College in December 1960. Susan taught Infants Classes in the Newcastle area for several years before her sense of adventure surprised us when she decided to seek a teaching position in Canada. Contacts on board the ship led her to Calgary where she lived for the rest of her life. She sometimes returned to Newcastle to visit her parents (both now long deceased), although it meant that she had to miss summer that year. For many years she kept in contact with me and her childhood neighbour and close friend Robyn (dec.) as well as her two cousins, Pam (dec.) and Joan. We heard of her travels and her teaching experiences. She loved both. She seemed very happy with her life in Canada, except for the winters. Communication ceased mysteriously in June 2007. Sadly, all our efforts to locate her - by phone, mail, Calgary police, Red Cross, the Canadian Embassy in Canberra - were in vain. Last week, a message from a Funeral Director to her cousin Pam brought the sad news of her death, just a few weeks before her 78th birthday. Pam contacted me and I contacted Angela and we reminisced, saddened, wondering what had happened to Susan during the past 13 years, hoping that she had spent them in good health among friends. I have lovely memories of the time we spent together and I treasure the friendship she offered when I was a "new girl" in her class. Rest in Peace, Susan Margaret Walters.
