Obituary of Eleanor FRY (nee Reeves)

April 29, 1922 – Clay City, Kansas, USA

May 3, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Our dearest Joy passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2020, at the Eau Clare Assisted Living Residence in Calgary, AB. She had just celebrated her 98th birthday and some family members were so very honoured to be with her.

Joy was born in Clay City, Kansas on April 29, 1922, and soon afterwards the family moved to a farm in Killam, AB. In the 1930s, they moved to White Rock, BC, and later moved to Lethbridge in the 1940s where she joined the Canadian Women’s Army Core (C.W.A.C.) and rose in rank to Sergeant. After the war, she met Lt.Co. Peter Fry in Calgary and were married in 1948. Together they raised three children, Peter-John, Garry, and Brenda. Joy was always active with a variety of community groups, especially the Girl Guides of Canada becoming a Guiding Commissioner. After retirement, Joy and Peter travelled across Canada many times and down through the states to Mexico and Central America, making many friends along the way. She loved family, birding, gardening, knitting, travelling, horses, dancing and singing in her choir.

Joy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Garry and Karen; her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Leo; her grandchildren, Pamela, Jenny, Jill, Bronwen, Dylan, Andrew, Julia, Patrick and Paul; her great-grandchildren, Arizona, Hunter, Jalen, Ian, Wyatt, Oden, Harrison, Indiana, Hunter, Sophie and Arthur; and great-great-grandchild Olive. Joy is also survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law and their families, Fern Upright (Jim) and Kay Riley(Frank); as well as her sister-in-law Elisabeth Comfort (Albert) and their family, and Marie Reeves (Jack) and their family. She was predeceased by her devoted husband Peter, her son and his wife Peter-John and Helle, her grandson Christopher, sisters Vaughn and Dorthy and brother Jack, sisters-in-law Marg (Hugh) Bates and Mary (Angelo) Pagnucco; and brother-in-law John Fry.

Our family would like to thank all the caregivers at the Eau Clare Residence that have been so kind and considerate. We are so very grateful to these wonderful women who lovingly cared for our Mom. We also want to thank our dear wonderful family member Lynn Farvolden for all her help, love and support over the years. Special thanks too, to Mike Stairs (Pamela) for all his tireless help, guidance and strength.

She was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
