Obituary of David Patrick FITZGERALD

January 31, 1942 – Edmonton, Alberta

May 8, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Dave beloved husband of Karen, of Calgary, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2020, at the age of 78 years.

After battling multiple myeloma for over ten years, Dave passed away peacefully at the Rosedale Hospice with his wife by his side.

Dave was born in Edmonton, AB and raised in Vancouver, BC, before moving to Calgary to work on the racetrack. Here he met his wife, Karen and some of his closest lifelong friends. After nearly ten years working with horses, Dave began a career in seismic. This took Dave, his wife and son, Patrick, around the world for almost six years. After travelling the world, Dave and Karen settled in Black Diamond, where they raised their two children, Patrick and Kathleen. Dave then started working at Volker Steven Contracting as a labourer and retired 34 years later as a purchaser. He loved his job and considered everyone there like family. When Dave had free time, he loved spending time in the mountains, either hiking with his dog Scooter in the summer or skiing with his family in the winter. Some of the family’s fondest memories are of ski trips they took with extended family. For the last few years of Dave’s life, he found joy living with his daughter Kathy and her family because he was able to play with his two youngest grandkids and watch them grow.

Dave was predeceased by his father Patrick Fitzgerald, mother Grace Fitzgerald (nee Baker), sisters Vivian Fitzgerald and Wanda Wright (nee Fitzgerald), and brother Harold Fitzgerald. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen Fitzgerald (nee Koch), son Patrick Fitzgerald (Shelley Kaminski), daughter Kathleen Good (Ryan Good); and grandchildren Katherine and Jonathan Fitzgerald, Aislin and Fynn Good; as well as his sister Sylvia Fitzgerald (John Noyes) and brother Brian Fitzgerald; as well as nephew Adam, nieces June, Caroline, Dawn, Meegan, Melanie and their families.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre doctors, nurses and staff for their help while Dave fought Multiple Myeloma.

Before going to hospice, Dave was able to spend a week at home with his family by his side. The family would like to thank all of the caregivers from Home Instead, especially Emma, for all of the considerate care they gave Dave at home and the support they offered his family.

To the Rosedale Hospice, our heartfelt thanks for the kind and compassionate care you afforded David during his final days.

Due to COVID-19, there will be no celebration of life at this time, but the family looks forward to having friends and family over when restrictions lift to celebrate Dave. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on David’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
