Obituary of Dr. Lloyd Edward RODWAY

May 7, 1925 - May 4, 2020

Lloyd was born in Winnipeg on May 7, 1925 and died on May 4, 2020, a few days short of his 95th birthday in Calgary. He was the only son of Charles and Daisy Rodway.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Margaret, their three daughters, Jan (Mark Dantzer), Catherine and Megan (Edward Burdon); their five grandchildren, Sarah, Ruth John, Rebeka and Katie; and their four great-grandchildren, Merrit, Garren, Odran and Iona. Also surviving him are his sister Donna Thompson, his nephew David and his nieces, Ellen and Patricia.

Lloyd joined the Royal Canadian Airforce at the age of 18 and was an air gunnery instructor for his first year of service. He was granted two embarkation leaves but to his great disappointment, never served overseas before leaving the force a couple of years later with the rank of Flying Officer.

As a youngster, Lloyd became fascinated by cement, an interest that guided his education and subsequent career. After graduating with his BSc in Engineering, he was a salaried employee with a couple of large companies – and discovered that he wasn’t a “company man”. He therefore started his own company - Western Concrete Testing – and discovered that he couldn’t make a decent living. He was ultimately a partner with two medium-sized consulting firms-and discovered that this gave him both enough autonomy and a good living. While still working, he obtained his Ph.D. He subsequently served on various national and international committees, presented at conferences, published a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals, and taught the occasional course at SAIT and U of C. Lloyd was also appointed by the Canadian International Development Agency to conduct building investigations in Zambia and by the Asian Development Bank for ongoing development projects in Indonesia.

Lloyd had many interests throughout his life. He was a strong swimmer and SCUBA diver, the latter of which he occasionally used in the underwater testing of concrete bridges. He loved walking along the river paths in Calgary and hiking in the Rockies. He thoroughly enjoyed skiing and was a ski patrol at Lake Louise. He held a private pilot’s license, flying Cessna 150’s and 172’s. He also had a motorcycle license and had great fun riding his Honda Goldwing on back country roads. He was an avid birder.

Lloyd loved the outdoors, and especially the time he spent with his family at the cabin at Crimson Lake Provincial Park. He swam, water skied, canoed, kayaked and hiked – when not chopping wood, clearing out weeds or throwing kerosene on the nightly bonfire. He loved to sing, loudly and offkey. He loved to read. He loved to eat sweets and took pride in his helplessness in the kitchen. He loved to take spontaneous, candid pictures, all of which he kept in albums (much to the chagrin of his wife and daughters). He loved to travel and had the great good fortune of visiting at least a small part of every continent, except Antarctica.

His was truly a life well lived, filled with the love of his family and friends.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service of Internment of Ashes will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Christ Church, Elbow Park. A Celebration of Lloyd’s Life will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Lloyd’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
