Obituary of Henrietta Josephine ALEXANDER (nee Hewson)

April 30, 1921 - Moosejaw, Saskatchewan

May 13, 2020 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Hetty Alexander on Thursday, May 13, 2020 at the age of 99 years.  Hetty passed away following hip surgery with her daughter and son-in-law by her side: her death was not COVID related.

Hetty was the beloved mother of daughter Lynn Rule (John) and son Ted Alexander, grandmother (Amma) to grandsons, Jon Rule (Sheila) and Jamie Rule (Allison Miller); and great-grandmother to precious granddaughters, Caitlin and Peyton Rule. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Dr. Thomas Albert Alexander, who passed away in 2007.

Hetty, the eldest of eight children, was born into a large and loving Hewson family and is survived by sisters, Thelma Reid, Audrey Lockyer, Charlotte Oberthier (Robert); brother Keith Hewson (Shirley) and brother-in-law Ken Lewis. She was predeceased by brothers, John Hewson (Jean), Phil Hewson (Sheila); sister Anita Lewis, brothers-in-law, Lew Reid and Lloyd Lockyer; sister-in-law Helen Millott and brother-in-law Gordon Alexander (Jerry). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Hetty was born in Moose Jaw, and grew up in Regina where she met and married Albert in 1944 during the Second World War. They resided in Summerside PEI until after the war, then Edmonton until 1950, Nanton until 1958, then Calgary until the present. Hetty was artistic and a perfectionist, and took great pride in her home, her garden and her favourite hobby, china painting. She had a great sense of humour and an excellent memory for dates, events and phone numbers and would entertain family and friends with many stories from the past. Hetty always looked forward to any family gathering, she treasured her many friends and was devoted to her church.

A special thank you to the staff and caregivers at Trinity Lodge where Mom happily resided the last four years, and to the nurses and doctors at Foothills Hospital for their care the last two months. Due to health restrictions, funeral services will be announced at a later date and will take place at St. Peter’s Anglican Church.
