Obituary of Elizabeth (Betty) Rose JENSEN (nee Farrell)

October 31, 1940 - Calgary, Alberta
June 8, 2020 - Calgary, Alberta

Betty Jensen of Calgary, AB passed away on Monday, June 8, 2020 at the age of 79 years.

Betty was born October 31, 1940 in Calgary, AB. She was the second youngest in the Farrell family of six children. Betty was a true-blue Alberta woman. Her mother, Marie, was considered a homesteader as she was born in 1903. Her father, Tom, came to AB in 1920 from Beaverton, ON. In life, Betty strived to be a good spouse, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and reliable friend to many people. Betty was an exceptionally good business woman. Her talent as an entrepreneur along with Gordon and her boys made Sunnyside Greenhouses a remarkably successful Calgary business. Betty knew little about the green house business. Gordon’s parents started the business and Gordon and Betty took it over soon after they were married. They moved from the old Sunnyside area to Bowness. They worked as a family business and proved to be incredibly good at developing business with customers and suppliers, as well as the Bowness community and employees. Betty and family employed thousands of seasonal workers over the years. Some stayed on in permanent roles in the business. Many completed educations and started on their life journey as result of Sunnyside. Betty had great dog in her life named Max. He accompanied her to Mexico for the winter in Puerto Vallarta. Max could do no wrong. She loved cats too, but Max was special. Betty could not pass by a slot machine in a casino without sitting and playing her luck. Overall, she was lucky in that too.

We will miss Betty. She lived life head on with kindness in her heart, a warm smile, genuine, effort to do the right thing, respect for all her contacts with others and a deep loving care for family.

Betty is survived by her sons, Warren and Grant Jensen; daughters-in-law, Brenda and Thuy; six grandchildren, Jens, Lindsay, Kai, Jessica, Derek and Tiffany; and four great-grandchildren; stepdaughter Kate Silver, and Thuy’s mother, Le Bui. She is also survived by her brother, Tom.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Gordon in 2014, and her siblings, Mike, Larry, Pat and Jeannette.
