Condolences
I am very saddened to hear of Al's passing.
I worked for Al in Production Planning & Coordination during the last 6 years of his career with SCL.
He was the epitome of a great leader. He was very effective at communicating job expectations and allowed us latitude to engage at all levels outside and inside the company intervening only when insurmountable barriers became present.
His only request was "Don't make me look like a Wally". The few times this happened, he handled it respectfully and discreetly.
The most memorable instance in which I was subjected to this treatment was after a day that I sent out product slightly off spec in order to make the monthly volume nomination. I got the speech about "making a Cadillac with high craftsmanship and sending it out with a square tire is no better than a Lada". I never forgot it; Product Quality was not negotiable.
Because of his leadership, he built a high performing team. I am thankful to have been a part of the team and Al's wheelhouse.
I was late to hear about Al's passing. How sad. My condolences to all in his family.
I was able to relate very easily to Al. I always found it very easy and comfortable to be around him. I loved his sense of humour and his perspective on many things. I guess we shared a lot of similarities in terms of what we did for fun as kids, and also as young men. Particularly when it came to playing sports.
I only knew him the last few years. I always liked to run into him at the pub, where we had so many laughs and memorable conversations. Mainly sports, and definitely a focus on rugby. What great stories he had, and what a gift he had at telling them. How he loved to trash talk my favourite team to get a reaction out of me.
Just a special personality that I found so much pleasure to be around.
I will think of him often.
Sorry to hear of Al’s passing, my condolences to you and your family. I had golfed many a round with Al at Water valley, we shared a few spirits and laughs together. We talked oil and gas and solved most of worlds problems after our rounds. Al always had a saying when ever had a birdie or saved a great par... “Even a blind squirrel can find a acorn”.. I still use Al’s words of wisdom today! God Bless..
Was so sorry to hear about Al. Sending my sympathy to Angie and the rest of his family, all his golf buddies. I marshalled many years at Watervalley and enjoyed seeing them coming to enjoy a round of golf. May you keep his memories alive, he will be only a thought away.
