Ed Dyck: lover of God, master encourager, natural disciple maker, healthy at home in heaven today beside his dear Dolores...
This week I had the privilege of attending Ed Dyck’s funeral at First Alliance Church Calgary - wonderfully led by Les Bon-Bernard.
Ed Dyck was very instrumental in my journey to discover life and faith in Jesus. He was also formative to me in realizing my gifts and calling to be a pastor. Back in the 70’s Ed & Delores served as lay people at Southgate Alliance Church Edmonton and led the youth group ministry as volunteers. Ed loved and affirmed everybody ridiculously well with astonishing enthusiasm; a veritable radiator of the grace of God. He also was a tremendous discipler; seeing and provoking to life the unique potential of ‘Christ in me’ in teenagers’ lives, even awkward and wayward ones like me. Ed was the first person to put the Word of God in my hands and say ‘you feed them’... asking me to teach the Bible study to my peers at youth group the next week. At the time I was just a beginner reading the Bible and had no idea what to do. Through the help of his son Terry, I landed on James chapter 2 and taught on the power of the tongue, for good or for bad. And called myself out and challenged our youth group to step up in our submission to Jesus as Lord of our day to day speech and how we use our tongue to bless or to tear down. God moved in our hearts in response to the Word. And God began to move in my heart, as a teacher of the Word.
Rest in peace my dear friend and mentor Ed Dyck. My whole life shifted for the better (FOREVER) because I experienced your loving care, your affirmation, and your intentionality to disciple me to know and follow Jesus.
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!””
— Revelation 14:13 NLT
To the Dyck Family, Our love and prayers are with you. May the peace of God and the ‘best of Ed’ memories be your constant companion.
Love, Brent & Mandy
Thank you so much for making it possible to be a part of the Memorial Service for your dad, on line. It was a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man! I personally am going to miss those big " teddy bear " hugs from him. We extend our deepest condolences to you as a family and pray for God's peace and comfort to surround you at this difficult time.
I am saddened by your father's passing. Ed touched a lot of people's lives - mine included and I am glad I had the privilege to know him during my time at FAC. I'll always have fond memories of his leading us as Senior Pastor at FAC, especially on our road trips to Rosebud as well as the senior luncheons. He brought so much joy to those around him. I’m so sorry about his death. He will be missed. You are in my thoughts and my prayers
Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 - There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die... a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance
Ed was an amazing person. A spiritual giant. I had the privilege of getting to know them when they served at Bonavista Baptist Church. He and his sweet wife Dolores were an incredible team. I loved Ed's laughter and easy smile. He was so interested in everyone and was so warm and kind to all. He will be missed. Sending my love and condolences to his family.

I want to wish your family my sincere condolences. I only knew Ed briefly during my time in Calgary at different churches and events. My reflections on Ed are that he was a warm inviting man. My work with Youth For Christ and the Mustard Seed was important to him. My mom passed away in March and we had a small COVID memorial in August. I know very well the challenge you are facing. My prayers go with you and your family.
Ed officiated my wedding in 2005 he will be greatly missed!
I came to know Ed when he was on the board of Straight Talk Ministries — the ministry run by Randy and Donna Carter. Our board meetings felt more like a small group and it was delightful to share with Ed and learn from his vast life experience and up-beat outlook, even when times were tough and challenging.
When he heard something exciting, he invariably started his sentence with the phrase: "Oh, man . . . , or, "Oh boy oh boy . . . ." I could see the boy in the man. He was young at heart.
Ed asked me a couple of times to speak to the seniors' group at church and the last time I asked him if he would interview me. Ed asked the best questions because he loves people and he loves Jesus. He wanted his questions to lead to an introduction to Jesus for those who didn't know him in the audience. I told him he should have had a talk show! He liked that.
It's impossible not to grieve such a large presence, like Ed. I know his beloved family will miss him terribly, but what a blessed assurance we have that Ed is now in heaven with Jesus and his Dorothy, whom he cared for so lovingly.
You have my deepest condolences.

Please accept our sincerest condolences. Through Bonavista Baptist we learned to appreciate Eds sense of humour, compassionate spirit and heart for service. Who could forget his smile? He and Dolores were a perfect match and now they are together in His presence. We shall uphold you all in our prayers and remember Ed with great fondness.

Ed frequently stopped in to see Marlene at Westview Baptist Church office and called her cousin ( in plaut dietsch - friendschaft (sp??). She always dismissed this suggestion. But, Ed would jokingly say anyone of Mennonite ancestry has relatives somewhere in the European past. I (Roy) have researched the Genealogical Registry and Database of Mennonite Ancestry, Fresno, CA and find that Ed and Marlene do have common ancestors. Through Peter Rempel 1735 on Marlene's Buhler side and Abraham Olfert 1705 on Marlene's Penner side. These ancestors lived in Prussia (now Poland) at that time. A small world indeed,
Our sincere sympathy to each of his children, grand children and sister Margaret Zacharias. We pray that you are comforted by the knowledge Ed is at home with his Lord and Saviour.
