Obituary of Malcolm Thomas STEPHEN, MD

March 3, 1933 – Saint John, New Brunswick
September 6, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

With very heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Malcolm Thomas Stephen, MD (b. 1933) on September 6, 2020 in his home in Calgary, AB.

Malcolm’s life was marked with significant accomplishment in the field of medicine and public health, and much laughter, music and enjoyment in the pleasures life had to offer. Malcolm (also known as Buck) attended St. Francis Xavier University and graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1959. He started his medical practice as the town Doctor in Shediac, NB. House calls were common in those days, and in the harsh winters, plows were called so he could arrive to deliver babies. Sometimes grateful patients paid him with lobsters. Malcolm was active in that community with the Lobster Festival and the Athletic Club. In 1968, Malcolm temporarily moved his young family to Ontario where earned his diploma in Public Health from the University of Toronto. In 1969, he became the Regional Medical Officer with NB Public Health, where he was instrumental in establishing a safe water system for the town of Shediac. In a later role, as the Regional Medical Director for CN Railway, Atlantic Canada, he established one of the first Employee Assistance Programs in North America, something he later felt especially proud of. Malcolm, Joan and youngest son Jeffrey moved to Montreal in 1981, after accepting the appointment of Canada’s Chief Medical Officer for CN Railway and Air Canada, a role for which he was knighted by the Order of St. John. Then, after a long tenure with CN, Malcolm returned to Moncton where he settled into semi–retirement providing medical and occupational health services to a number of companies and Agencies, including the military, RCMP and local police. In 2016, Malcolm and Joan moved west to be closer to more of their children and grandchildren.

Malcolm was a member of numerous professional societies including the NB Medical Society and the Canadian Board of Occupational Medicine, to name but a few, and was a Fellow of the American College of Occupational Medicine and the Priory Council of Canada. Malcolm was also a member of the Moncton Gyro and Moncton Golf and Country Clubs. He was a talented pianist and entertainer who brought much joy to family birthdays, holiday gatherings and Happy Hours.

Malcolm was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Fema (Corey) Stephen, brothers Douglas, Leonard and Wally and sister Dorothy (Zed), and is survived by his sister Lawanda Thompson.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 61 years, Joan (Crowell) Stephen; by daughter Tracey (George) Sirois and sons Bruce (Joanne) and Jeffrey (Line); by his grandchildren Brendan Lamb, Alec Monique Stephen, Malcolm (Mac) Stephen, Monika Sirois, Jacques Sirois (Leanne) and two great–grand children, Maddox Stephen and Wyatt Sirois.
