Condolences
Auntie Sophie was my godmother. I remember her as fabulous. One memory I have as a child I walked in to her home in Northeast Calgary, she greeted me saying she had a surprise for me in the bedroom. I had no idea what it could be, for some reason I thought I was going to walk in to see a man playing a guitar, wearing a cowboy hat. Hahaha. but it was a big beautiful teddy bear! It’s a strange memory haha but my favourite. I’ll never forget you! Xoxo all my love, Kala
I'm very sorry to hear about your loss and want to share my heartfelt condolences. Sophia was a great source of warmth in the department, and as a student I always enjoyed talking with her when I'd visit the office. And of course I would find reasons to pop in whenever I was on the floor - her good humour was infectious and will be sorely missed.
I wish you all the very best in facing this difficult time, and am glad to remember her so fondly.
Respectfully,
Matthew Pettit (grad student, U of T)
I worked with Sophia at OISE for a number of years and we became pals. I am so saddened to learn of her passing. Sophia and I shared a love of animals with special love for Maine Coons as she had one as well. She was a hero in rescuing a beautiful husky, George, stolen from his owners in Toronto. Sophia saw him with some boys and bravely approached them asking about the dog. Sophia rode in the Canada Day parade with George and his owners in a classic convertible. She was so happy that she reunited this beautiful dog with his family. Sophia will be missed by many. My condolences to her family
So sorry for your loss. Sophie was such a personable part of the Anthropology Department. But my happiest memory of her is actually from a Blue Jays game. It just so happened she won a player's shirt at a game I was attending--she got to show her enthusiasm on the jumbotron! When I talked to her afterward she was so excited and happy. Her enthusiasm was like a tonic. We very much missed her after she retired, and I am terribly sad to hear of her passing. Mary Silcox (Professor, Anthropology, U of T)
