Obituary of Fuad Gulam GWADRY

August 9, 1967 - October 6, 2020

Fuad Gulam Gwadry of Toronto, ON, formerly of London, ON, passed away suddenly on October 6, 2020 at the age of fifty-three.

Fuad was born in Kampala, Uganda and moved to Canada with his family as refugees after the forced exodus of South Asians by from the Idi Amin regime in 1972. Fuad excelled in mathematics, statistics and computer science. He received his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Maryland and eventually worked at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, making key contributions in the fields of genomics, functional MRI and cancer research.  His articles and contributions earned their way into several prestigious journals including Science, Nature Science, Cancer Research, Archives of General Psychiatry and Pain.  His research covered widely divergent areas including sleep disorders, suicide prevention, gene profiling in colon cancer and veterans suffering war-related traumatic brain injury.

Fuad was a good friend to all, generous with his time and support, gifted with a brilliant mind and gentle sense of humour. He was a keen athlete, competing in marathons and running events. Throughout his personal struggles, his admirable characteristics and resolve shone through.

He will be sadly greatly missed by his parents, Khatoon and Gulam; sister Femida, and brother Faheem. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Anissa, Kira, Yasin and Kamran.

Funeral Services will be held at the Ismaili Community Center Jamatkhana – Calgary Headquarters (1128 - 45 Ave NE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.  Graveside to follow at the Rocky View Garden of Peace.
