I have such fond memories of Richard when Shelley, friends and I would meet him at the Palliser Hotel for cocktails, great stories about his cattle business, and a lot of fun and laughs. He was a bundle of energy who gathered around him people who had a real love for life. A devoted father and friend to all, his memory and legacy will live on. My sincerest condolences to the entire family.

To all of Richard's family...I am truly sorry for your loss. I had the honor of working for Richard at his hotel in Moose Jaw for many years. I always enjoyed visiting with him when he came to town or speaking with him on the phone when he called to "check in". He was a very special man.
Richard was one of my favorite clients As I did contract work for him in his purebred Simmentals.Treated me very well.
Rest in peace my friend..

Dear Sue and Family,
Please accept our deepest condolences. We were surprised to hear of Shig's passing. We thought he was on the mend. I remember the many dinners and flowers from Uncle Shig but more than anything I loved his inspirational business and life stories that paralleled his amazing story of slave labourer/ sugar beet worker to Heritage Inn Hotel and Convention Centre Magnate and a "godfather" like leader to many.We will dearly miss him and hope his legacy will live on forever.
So very sorry,
Don and Shoko Mukai and Family
Sorry to learn of Richard's death. We have many fond memories of doing business with Richard. He was an ardent competitor in many areas of life but always had that special laugh. He is an example of real entrepreneurship. We are thankful to have known him and your family. We ask that God will give you Sue and your family comfort.

We offer our condolences to the family on the loss of such a patriarch. As large a presence as he was when he entered a room he always had a smile and a kind word for those around him. He will be missed.

I had the privilege to have become friends with Shelley and Sandi back in University in the early eighties and not long after also having the privilege to meet the rest of their family, Suzie, Sue and “Mr. Kanegawa”...Richard.
The first time I visited the ranch Richard gave me my first lesson on identifying cattle. He was so eager to teach me the difference between a cow, heifer, bull and steer and got a kick out of telling a city kid how a Bovine becomes a Steer and seeing the uncomfortable look on my face!
He had beautiful blend of boyish charm, curiosity and natural ability to talk the blue streak with anyone of any age.
I think that was Richards gift that made him so succesful in life, family and business. Truly admired and adored by many.
I’m thankful to have know him and his wonderful family.
As years went by it was always a pleasure to see Richard and Sue when they came to Calgary to visit.
At one time Richard was quite the golf fanatic and I had the pleasure of playing a round remembering how tolerant Richard was of my poor golfing skills and how it cracked Shelley and I up watching the way he shook his head every time I shanked a ball.
At one of the girls wedding...I think it was Suzie’s, Richard ordered a tower of cooked prawns which stood as a center piece before entering the main dinning hall which Richard never abandoned... at least it seemed that way every time we passed by the “pagoda of prawns” with him mumbling,”Mmmmm, they’re sooo good, have some”! Who did he order the prawns for?
Richard has left an indelible mark in my life and heart.
Rest In Peace Mr. Kanegawa.
My deepest condolences to the family.
To Richard’s Family
I am sad to learn of his passing.
Although I haven’t seen him for years,
I remember the many times I enjoyed his friendship.
Richard and I became friends several years ago and we shared a few drinks together many times, when he travelled
to Calgary and later we became neighbours when he purchased a condo in Eau Claire Estates.
He was a remarkable man.
I have great respect for him.
The world needs more people like him.
Kindest regards,

Dear Kanegawa Family
We know these are very emotional & stressful times for the family, but just wanted to say that our thoughts and prayers are always with Richard and the Kanegawa Family.
We know that Richard will always be missed and the space he left will never be filled. But the family and the Heritage Inn team has awesome memories with him, which they will cherish always and he will remain in our memories for ever.
I didn't have the pleasure of working with him, but heard a lot about his ambitious life and the way he took life positively and aggressively with care and compassion for the staff, community & the family. Those are the core values of our organization which came from a fearless leader like him.
Richard where ever you are hopefully you will be looking down on us and just to let you know.
"WE WILL MISS YOU ALWAYS".
I am so sorry for you your loss, my condolences to the family . Richard was a very dynamic individual who left a huge impression on everyone he met. I can only express how fortunate me and my family were to have been part of his life in some way. I have referred to his success often and strive to model my own life the same way he lived his. He was fearless in business and a visionary for his time. I can only hope that one day I too will have the respect and awe that Richard was able achieve in his life. I think he will leave a big hole in many lives with his passing but his legacy will live on. Great men never die they live on forever in the hearts and minds of everyone they touch. Be sad today but be proud for the years you had in the presence of a remarkable man.

I had the pleasure of meeting Richard and Sue at their farm, when hunting with my father Frank Finn. He had known Richard for years and told me many stories about why he thought so highly of Richard, his business acumen, his honesty and values, and his true friendship.
