Edith EARL

Obituary of Edith Hannah (nee Davies) EARL

February 20, 1920 - October 13, 2020

It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to our dear Mom, Edith Earl, who passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at the age of 100 years.

Edith was born in Edmonton on February 20, 1920 to parents Margaret and Hugh Davies.  Margaret took her tiny premature baby home to their farm in Sibbald Alberta by train and horse-drawn sleigh in winter weather.  Good times on the farm and close neighbours created many happy memories for Edith.  She left the farm to go to Calgary in 1938 where she worked as a maid for two Calgary families who have kept in touch with her throughout her life.  She married George Earl in 1944 and together they built their house in the Sunalta district of Calgary. They were active members of the Sunalta Community Association and Scarboro United Church.  Edith lived in their home for 60 years until she moved to the Fountains of Mission retirement residence.

Although she left the farm as a teenager, the farm never left her. She always kept a close eye on the weather and how it might affect farmers. Edith and George always had a wonderful garden and Edith could whip up the most amazing meals for unexpected guests at the drop of a hat. She always had homemade bread, cookies and squares on hand for all.

Edith loved babies and children. If babies were crying, she could always calm them. Children loved being with Edith – digging carrots in the garden, playing cards, making cookies and donuts, playing make believe and having tea parties with her children’s china tea set.  Some of the cards Edith received for her 100th birthday were from adults who have wonderful childhood memories of times with her.

Edith was a quiet and patient person who was always thankful for her wonderful life. Up until the last month of her life, she was amazing both mentally and physically. She enjoyed walking around the block, playing cards, knitting, puttering around her suite, caring for her plants - always trying to be active.

Mom left us beautiful memories and her love and values are still our guide. Although we cannot see her, she will always be by our side.

She is survived by her sister, Edna, her children, David (Dorothy), Richard (Gillian) and Lorna (Don) and as ’Grandma Edith‘ to Jeff, Diane and Matthew.

A private celebration of Edith’s life will be held with her family. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Edith’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Edith Earl, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
