Obituary of Peter Edward MARTENS

October 14, 1931 – Coaldale, Alberta
October 25, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Peter Edward Martens, beloved husband of Velma Martens (nee Martin), of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at the age of 89 years.

Peter was born in Coaldale, Alberta, on October 14, 1931, the youngest of six siblings.  Peter’s father died when he was a teenager and he assumed a significant role in providing and caring for his family.  Taking jobs hoeing sugar beets and working as a beekeeper, he developed practical skills and a strong work ethic. This early sense of responsibility led him to purchase a school bus and start his own bus service which became the first daily service between Coaldale and Lethbridge.  After moving to Calgary for work, he decided to pursue a university education.  Peter graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1958.

Peter loved curling and it was on the ice he met Velma.  They were married on March 31, 1962 and made a home in Calgary where they had three children.  After a successful career as an accountant, Peter accepted the opportunity to complete a degree in education.  This career transition saw him teaching business education in several Calgary high schools. He retired after a successful career to enjoy time with family and the love of his life.

Peter was a charter member of Brentview Baptist Church.  It was a place where his faith was deepened, where he readily took opportunities to serve and where he developed lasting friendships.

Peter loved country living and wanted to share that lifestyle with his family.  He enjoyed building and maintaining their acreage near Balzac.  He especially loved taking care of his cows and horses and could be found milking his Jersey cow to nourish his three growing boys.

Peter loved his family and valued his role in providing for them, lending a hand on work projects, giving advice and hosting many family dinners and gatherings. He loved spending time with Velma, his sons and their families

Peter is survived by his loving wife Velma, children and daughters-in-law, Kendal (Judy), Gord (Lana), Rob; grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob, Reese and Emma.  Peter was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Anna; and his siblings, Anne, Tina, Helen, Victoria and Jacob Jr.
