Obituary of Joseph SPORETH

January 1, 1933 – Budapest, Hungary
October 29, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Joseph (Joe) passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at the age of 87 years. Joe came to Canada as a refugee in 1957, fleeing the Hungarian Revolution. He was proud to become a Canadian citizen, but he never forgot his Hungarian roots. He worked hard all of his life to provide for his family doing various jobs such as driving truck, delivering furniture, and delivering milk. For nearly thirty years, he was a skilled floor-layer. He enjoyed biking and walking around the neighbourhood, spending time at the cabin, doing yard-work and gardening, and most of all, woodworking. Through the years he crafted a variety of wooden toys,  sets of building blocks, and beautiful pieces of furniture. He was most proud of the cabin he and his wife and son built at Sylvan Lake.

Joe is survived by his wife Eva, his daughter Gabriella (Gabe), son-in-law Tim Frey and beloved grandson, Danny Frey; all of Drayton Valley, AB. He is also survived by numerous relatives in Hungary. Joe was predeceased by his parents and his eldest brother in Hungary, and by his son Tom in 2000.

Our family is extremely grateful to the many wonderfully caring neighbours in Westgate for their countless acts of kindness as our parents struggled to maintain their independence in their own home. We want to extend a special thank you to Trevor Gadd and his family, Dolaine Beauchamp, and Katalin Toth for all their help and support. In keeping with Joe’s wishes, no service will be held.

Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Joe’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
