Obituary of Patricia Anne MERGEN (nee Birks)

Patricia Mergen of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at the age of 66 years. 

Patricia was born in Calgary, Alberta on March 8, 1954. She earned her designation as a Certified Management Accountant in her twenties, and throughout her life she continued her education and increased her many skills to include computer programming.  For the past thirteen years Pat enjoyed working with her colleagues as the Controller at Livestock Identification Services. Pat was an extremely hard worker with strong morals that guided her throughout her life. Horses were a life long passion for Pat that began when she was a young girl.  She met her husband, Gerhard Mergen, through their combined love of horses and they married in 1983. Pat was a member and volunteer of many different equine organizations and clubs throughout her life, including the Hanoverian Club of Western Canada, Volunteering at the Spruce Meadows Tournaments, and with Equine Canada as a Steward for Show Jumping events. Patricia accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her work and programming accomplishments as well as her family and the equestrian facility they built. Pat will be most remembered for her intelligence, strength and guidance, and always putting the needs of others before her own. 

Patricia is survived by her two daughters and two sons-in-law, Karli Mergen and David Sobolewksi of Calgary, AB, and Krista Mergen and Chris Starr of Millarville, AB; as well as her brother, David Birks of Calgary. Pat was predeceased by her husband Gerd, brothers, Don and Doug; and her parents, Douglas (Bill) and Phyllis Birks.
