Obituary of Ruth Jean OUIMET

April 26, 1923 – Montreal, Quebec January 15, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta Ruth Jean Ouimet (nee Glass) of Calgary passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the age of 94 years. CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. Born on April 26, 1923 in Montreal, Ruth was the youngest of nine children born to William and Williamina Glass. She married Joseph Ouimet in 1948 in Montreal. Joe worked in the construction industry which required them to relocate often. Over the years they lived in Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia and Kingston, Jamaica, as well as Quebec, eventually settling in Calgary in 1973. Ruth worked for CIBC for many years in Montreal, and as well as Alberta Book in Calgary until retiring in the early 1980’s. Sadly, Joe passed away in November 1984. Ruth was later fortunate enough to meet Stanley Matlo, who remained her constant companion for the next twenty-eight years. Together they were active members of the Kirby Seniors’ Centre in Calgary where they socialized and participated in various classes. Ruth also volunteered at the Centre. Her lifelong dream of visiting the UK became a reality in the early 1990’s when she joined a tour with the Centre travelling to England, Ireland and Wales. Ruth loved music, ballroom dancing, animals and laughter, but most of all she loved her family. She is survived by many nieces and nephews across Canada and the U.S. She was predeceased by her sisters May, Doris, Florence, Irene, Gladys and Edna and brothers Frank and Stanley. A Private Family Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Calgary, 800, 7015 Macleod Trail S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2K6, Telephone: (403)290-0110, www.alzheimercalgary.com. The family extends their sincere thanks to the wonderful staff at Mayfair Care Centre for their compassionate care of Ruth during her two and a half year stay with them. Also, a heartfelt thank to Cathy Liddle, Ruth’s loyal caregiver, for the loving care and friendship she provided on a daily basis in Ruth’s final years. In living memory of Ruth Ouimet, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek.
