Obituary of Thora Millicent DAVIS (née Lowry)

August 18, 1928 - Delburne, Alberta

November 13, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Thora Millicent Davis, wife of Ernie Davis of Calgary AB, died peacefully at home on Friday 13 November 2020, aged 92 years, just a few days short of her 63rd wedding anniversary. Thora and her late brothers Robert (Mick) and Morgan were raised in Delburne by a single mother during the Great Depression, and there learned resourcefulness and the indispensability of wit and irreverence. This held Thora in good stead throughout a long life. The friendships formed with “the girls” in Delburne lasted a lifetime, and until recently the annual reunions were treasured by “Dorcas.” Thora left school after grade 11 to support her mother, joining the staff at the Delburne branch of the Bank of Montreal. There, she met Ernie, and after several years working for the Royal Bank in Calgary, and after Ernie qualified as a CA, they married and spent the rest of their lives in Calgary. For many years, Thora volunteered with the Girl Guides in Varsity Acres. Later, she enjoyed her cabin and community at Clear Lake. A caring and compassionate person, Thora was a fierce friend and advocate, independent-minded and “liberated” long before that was a well-understood concept. In later years, her contact with home aides broadened her sense of the world, and as she welcomed new Canadians to her heart she shared her experience of being among the first generation of Alberta settler-pioneers. Fun-loving to the very last, and a raconteur of renown, she will be deeply missed by Ernie, Scott (Wendy), Tracy (Max) of Evanston IL, and deeply beloved nieces and nephews of the Lowry, Davis, and Scheibner families. We salute a true original.
