Obituary of Kin Leung LEW

April 10, 1925 - Fucaoyangcun, China
November 25, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Kin Leung Lew, from the coronavirus on Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at Revera-Bow-Crest Care Centre in Calgary.

Born in China, Kin grew up as a very athletic young man. He was an excellent and talented volleyball player winning many trophies. He married Wai Lan and had his first child, Wanda, before moving to Hong Kong. After adding Jeanny, Fred, Sam, and Gary to the family, Kin immigrated to Canada in December 1964. Upon arrival, he worked as a cook in Chinese restaurants in Lloydminster, AB.  Within five years, Donna and Lori joined his expanding family.

Having the desire to own his own business, Kin moved his family to Blairmore where he owned and operated a small grocery store called West End Confectionary Store. Later he moved the family to Didsbury where Kin operated another store until his retirement to Calgary in 1991.

As a sport enthusiast, he loved to watch all kinds of sports on TV, but his favourite was Hockey Night in Canada. Kin also enjoyed following the stock market and kept up to date on current affairs.  Travelling and gardening were activities that he also enjoyed. Kin had a regular routine of going to Chinatown every Friday to meet his friends for dim sum, and pick up the Chinese newspapers. At 95 years of age, Kin will be missed by those friends and relatives who enjoyed chatting and reminiscing with him.

Kin is survived by his seven children, Wanda (Randy), Jeanny (Terry) Moore, Fred (Lorraine), Sam (Tamarah), Gary (Qina), Donna (Michael) Szarmes, and Lori (Jonathan) O’Blenes. He will also be missed by his ten grandchildren, Chloe (Michael) Redig, Gregory, Julie, Jennelle, Steven, Kaylee, Alex, Juniper, Evan and Thomas. Kin was predeceased by his loving wife, Wai Lan in 2004.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North Calgary, AB) on Saturday, December 5, 2020 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In Lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, www.heartandstroke.ca. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Kin’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

The family of Kin would like to thank all the staff at Revera-Bow-Crest Care Centre for their exceptional care and compassion.

In living memory of Kin Lew, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
