Obituary of Doris Helen ANNEAR (nee Greene), RN, BScN

April 22, 1930 – Innisfail, Alberta
December 3, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Doris Helen Annear, beloved wife of the late Thomas Montague (Monty) Annear of Calgary, Alberta, passed away quietly in her sleep at the age of 90 years.

Doris was born in Innisfail, Alberta, daughter of Dr. Charles and Helen Greene. She completed her high school at Mount Royal College in Calgary, and then trained at the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1953. After working for several years at “The Holy,” she completed through the University of Alberta the required courses to earn her BScN. Subsequently, she became a staff nurse in neurosurgical nursing in Unit 92 at the Foothills Hospital, and then in sequence became Assistant Head Nurse, Head Nurse, Staff Development Nurse, and Coordinator, Advanced Course in Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing.

In 1980, Doris married Monty Annear, and they had nearly thirty-three wonderful years together. During her retirement, Doris co-edited Neurosurgery in Calgary: The First Fifty Years, an important contribution to university libraries across Canada.

Doris and Monty were favourites of their relatives on both family sides, and also made dozens of friends who enjoyed their wit and benefitted from their empathy. In 2017, Doris moved into the Manor Village Varsity as one of its first residents. She continued to make friends and cheer people with her quick humour and optimism. Doris was always active with church, golf, dog-walking, watercolour art group, and many volunteer activities. Doris enjoyed decades of visiting the family cottage at Sylvan Lake.

Doris is survived by her sister Margaret Bertram of Calgary and her brother Ian Greene of Toronto; nephew Ron Bertram of Calgary; nephew James Bertram of Vancouver; sister-in-law Eilonwy Morgan of Toronto; niece Christina Greene of Toronto; nephews Philip Greene and Girum Greene of Toronto; and numerous other in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins on both sides of the family, and friends.

A private funeral service will be held at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Soon afterwards, on Saturday December 12 at 1:00 p.m. Calgary time, a celebration of Doris's life will be held on Zoom.
