Obituary of June Ross GOODMAN (nee Burnison)

June 9, 1932 – Belfast, Northern Ireland
December 5, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

June Goodman, of Calgary, AB, passed away at home on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at the age of 88 years.

June was born in Belfast N. Ireland in 1932.  During the Second World War her family was evacuated to the countryside during the Belfast Blitz.  After the war, June worked in a pharmacy and joined the reserve of the Women’s Royal Navy (the Wrens).  In 1955 she immigrated to Canada, first living in Ottawa and then in Montreal where she met Chris.  They were married in 1957 at St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in Calgary, AB.  June worked until her children were born and learned to ski, hike and camp in the Rockies.
When the children were little June was a Red Cross swimming instructor and a Brownie Leader.  She sold real estate in the late 1960’s.  At the age of forty-two she returned to school and graduated in 1978 from the U of Calgary with a Bachelor of Nursing degree.  As she loved caring for babies, she got a job in the NICU at the Foothills Medical Center and loved working there until she returned to school to complete a Master of Science degree in 1983.  She then worked for Calgary Community Health Services, where she became Assistant Director of Nursing, before retirement in the early 1990’s.
June loved to travel and with Chris visited five continents and went on several dozen ocean cruises.  She loved to cook and entertain.  She and Chris have many friends at St. James Anglican Church and in Horizon Village – Varsity.  June cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a strong faith and she believed strongly that prayer changes things.  In the final months of her life, she spoke often of how grateful she was for her sixty-three year marriage and all the loving family that she had around her.  She marveled at how blessed she had always been.

Besides her loving husband Chris, June is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Brad Hvenegaard; son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Heather Goodman; grandchildren, Anne (Brian) MacKenzie, Neil (Christina) Hvenegaard, Laura Fallows (Ian), Helen Hvenegaard, Austen Goodman and Tate Goodman; as well as eight great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sisters and their families, Cathryn (Michael) Byrne and their children, Emma and John and Larraine (Michael) Caulfield and their children, John and David.
