Obituary of Douglas HILL
May 30, 1931 – Calgary, Alberta
December 7, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Douglas Hill on December 7th, 2020, at age 89.
After several years of living with dementia, Dad passed peacefully while he dreamt and now, his fond memories have returned to him as he looks down upon all of us with love.
A lifelong Calgarian, Doug was born at home in the northwest community of Mount Pleasant to parents John and Martha Hill, on May 30th 1931. Dad lived most of his adult life in Tuxedo Park; he married and helped raise his kids that he doted on.
Doug married Shirley (nee Wood; deceased) in 1954, and had three children. Although they separated in 1974, Dad was always present and his complete dedication to his kids knew no bounds; he was always there to offer a helping hand or to lend an ear. Neighbours in his community could always count on him for help with projects. Doug was a hard worker his entire life; starting off working on local produce farms, lumber yards, driving trucks and various jobs in Calgary, until he began his career with the Calgary Board of Education, which spanned over 30 years until he retired in 1996.
Doug always enjoyed camping, fishing and exploring Alberta and British Columbia; he loved road trips, was a knowledgeable car enthusiast and was often tinkering and fixing things.
Doug is predeceased by his oldest sisters Ruth Blomquist, Edith Culley and Dorothy Swartz, as well as brothers, Gilbert and William Hill.
Dad is loved by many and will be dearly missed by his sister, Leona Wallace, of Burnaby, BC; son John (Venus) and grandchildren Dennis, Vanessa, and Eric of Calgary; daughter Lori (Mark) and grandson Cole, of Hague, SK; and son Brad, of Calgary; as well as several nieces and nephews in Calgary and BC.
To a gentle man, with a heart of a giant, a wonderful father, grandfather, and brother:
You will be truly missed by us all… Farewell Dad.
Private interment will take place at a later date in 2021, when family are able to gather. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Doug’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
