Condolences
Our hearts go out to Irene and the girls and their families. We were saddened to hear of Leroy’s passing.
We have many fond memories of the friendship we shared with the Durands during our time in Beaverlodge.
I too am saddened by the news of Leroy’s passing.... and I am pleased that we had the opportunity to work for twenty some years in what was arguably one of the best High Schools in Alberta. The moto “WE ARE PROUD” summed up how we felt about working in this School....we felt we were part of the best staff and the school was filled with the best students who went on do make us, and the greater community very proud. During these years Leroy was also very actively involved in many community organizations and took pride in trying to make them better and more functional. Many great memories come to mind reflecting on that part of our lives.....Good Work Leroy....a life well lived.....Mac
It was only a few days ago that we received the shocking news about Leroy’s passing on, and it still has not sunk in. Leroy was such an all around wonderful man that it’s hard to believe that he is gone. In lieu of attending a memorial service (we live in Texas) I thought I would share some of my memories of Leroy.
Going back to the 1970’s, I first got to know Leroy as one of the high school Industrial Arts (“shop”) teachers where Leroy taught along with Gary Snell. I really enjoyed my time in the shop, which I suppose is only natural given that I was a future engineer. I was well aware that a big part of my enjoyment in that class was due to Leroy being the instructor. Once we demonstrated that we knew what we were doing, Leroy gave us/me the privilege of going well beyond the boundaries of the class itself. This was a lot of fun for me, and I know that I learned a great deal from these extracurricular activities. After he taught us how to use the photography lab, in grade 12 Leroy gave me and Ken Faris the leeway to use the photo lab whenever we wanted -- in pursuit of Ken and I doing the impromptu and activity photos for the school yearbook. And i recall many times Leroy worked with us one on one with the electronics lessons and lab. He did not have to do this, but I sure appreciated the individual attention and extra time he spent with me.
Outside of school, I have many fond memories of getting included in outdoor excursions with my father and Leroy. I can still see Leroy on his MotoSki heading out over the snow, with the rest of us not far behind. He was always friendly and helpful, and had a great sense of humor. Definitely the kind of person it is fun to be around.
To Leroy’s family, all of us who knew Leroy share in your grief. He was truly a wonderful, kind hearted man. He made a huge, positive impact on my education, for which i am grateful. Please accept my sincere condolences as you and your family work through the grief and this loss.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Leroy. He will be greatly missed by those of us at the Senior Centre as he was such a contributor - and an excellent card player. I remember him telling me the way he taught his grandchildren math was to teach them crib. He had them thinking quickly and correctly. Condolences to your family and God Bless.

He was my shop teacher in High School. I remember when I wasn't even sure what to study in his class. He suggested drafting. I said, 'what's that?' He explained it was the start of how buildings are planned. I was still confused. So I tinkered with the drawing board and came up with some creations of my own. I also learned how to make rubber stamps.

My condolences to the Durand family. "Mr" Durand was a young teacher at Manning High School when I was a student there. He brought new ideas to a country school!
Sending love and hugs your way! He was a wonderful, kind and gentle man!
Our sincere condolences to Irene and family. Leroy was a reliable constant helper at the Seniors on the Bow. His positive pragmatic attitude added to any discussions we had wherever we met.
He was an awesome card player and mastered any game. He was fun to play with as cards were a game and he knew fun was part of it. He will be missed.
We want to express our sympathy on Leroy's passing. We got to know him when we played cards at SOTB.
We also enjoyed a taste of his fine wine at Christmas. So long, missing you.

Leroy was an energizer bunny .. His commitment to getting the job done and correctly, was second to none. Leroy excelled at cards, being a host, ,a good friend and companion, and a great guy to share a glass of rum or his red wine with. Leroy was known for his "take out " weight while curling. Leader of the pack while snow shoeing or hiking . He was very proud of his family and mentioned many times how lucky he was. This tribute seems inadequate for a guy like Leroy.. We will miss you,
Keith and Betty Ann, Cochrane, AB.
