Myfanwy (Muffin) EKMAN

Obituary of Myfanwy (Muffin) Jean EKMAN

February 3, 1926 – London, England

December 15, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Myfanwy Ekman of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully of natural causes on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at the age of 94 years, with family by her side.

Myfanwy was an only child and would grow to love being surrounded by children, family and friends. She was given the nickname “Muffin” at a very young age, and never could remember the reason why.  She loved to dance, and it was at a dance during WW11 in London, England that she was introduced to her future husband, Douglas. When the war ended, Douglas returned to Canada, sadly leaving Muffin behind. He would later propose to her in a letter and mail her an engagement ring. After waiting two long years for Muffin to get the necessary documents required, she set out for her new adventure and boarded a small plane from London to Montreal, then a train to Lethbridge, AB where Douglas was awaiting her arrival. They were married in Lethbridge, AB, in 1947. Together they moved around Alberta and BC due to Doug’s construction work.  In the 1960’s they purchased twenty acres in Balzac, AB where they would settle and call home for twenty plus years. With Muffin’s love for children, they became foster parents. She would open her home and heart with her easy going and loving disposition to almost one hundred foster children over the years. Muffin had a strong sense of community and liked to keep busy. She was actively involved in committees, church groups and community functions in the Balzac area. She would attend and volunteer often at community dances, turkey suppers and helping others whenever needed. She loved a competitive game of crib, enjoyed hosting Bridge parties, baking cookies for her family and sewing. She would knit and crochet blankets, toques, sweaters and slippers, and would often donate to people in need.

Miss Me, But Let Me Go

Author – Unknown

When I come to the end of the road

and the sun has set for me.

I want no rites in a gloom-filled room,

why cry for a soul set free.

Miss me a little, but not too long,

and not with your head bowed low.

Remember the love we once shared,

Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take

and each must go alone;

It’s all a part of the Master’s plan,

a step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick at heart,

go to the friend you know.

And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds,

Miss me, but let me go.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, Rosaland (Kenneth) Knights of Calgary, AB, Michael (Pamela) Ekman of Kelowna, BC, Sherry (Loren) Keister of Chestermere, AB, and Sara Ekman of Calgary, AB; her foster children that stayed in touch, Connie and Giny Shepherd, and their families of Calgary, AB; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas in 2002.

Mom will be put to rest with Dad at the Queen’s Park Cemetery in the Field of Honour at a private family burial. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Muffin’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
