Obituary of Gordon DOBSON

February 11, 1921 – Calgary, Alberta

December 20, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

We are sad to announce the quiet passing of Gordon Dobson Sr. of Calgary, AB, on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at the age of 99 years.

Gordon will forever be remembered for his congenial personality and his dedication to his family. Gordon was a rare breed who was born, lived, and died, in Calgary. He had one brother and four sisters. His father, despite being born without hands, raised and showed Clydesdale horses in Canada and even Europe, while his mother kept the home fires burning.

After graduating from Western Canada High School,
while working at the “Met”, Gordon met Florence Mary Davey. Gordon and Florence were married on September 19, 1942 and they celebrated their sixty-ninth anniversary in 2011. Together they raised two sons, Gordon Jr. born in November of 1948, and Gerald born in September of 1952.

For much of his nearly forty year career, Gordon was a travelling industrial electric salesman whose territory extended from Thunder Bay to Vancouver. For most of those years, he worked for General Electric and Westinghouse. On Monday morning he would get into his car to cover his territory, returning home late Friday afternoon. He was proud to say he drove thousands of miles without ever having an accident.

As a young man his passion was playing baseball.
He remembered that he and his friends played on a diamond that was south of the Calgary city limits – at a time when 17th Avenue was the southern city limit. For much of the remainder of his life, he played golf, often with his brother-in-law, Alex Houston. A highlight of his golfing was a hole in one. He also enjoyed curling.

Gordon is survived by his son Gordon (Maureen). He was predeceased by his wife Florence, and his son Gerald.
