Glynn OWEN

Obituary of Glynn OWEN

January 7, 1930 - December 25, 2020

Glynn Owen, beloved husband of Moira Owen (nee Folster) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2020 at the age of 90 years.

Glynn was born in Medicine Hat, AB on January 7, 1930 and shortly thereafter moved to Yorkton, SK with his family. At age 12 he started doing odd jobs, and as a young teen he would skip school and ride his bike to the local airport, where he developed a passion for airplanes and “all things flying!”

Glynn married Moira on May 5, 1951 (almost 70 years). His career path took them to Prince Albert where he worked at Saskatchewan Government Airways.  There he obtained his aircraft maintenance engineer’s license and in his new role he had to spend extended periods in northern Saskatchewan and the North West Territories.

He joined the RCMP in April 1959, becoming a Special Constable in the Air Division.  His first posting was in Fort Smith, NWT.  He also served in Inuvik, NWT; Prince George, BC; Regina, SK and in 1984 he was promoted to the Technical Supervisor of Western Canada, RCMP Air Services based in Edmonton.

He retired from this position in April 1989 and he and Moira moved to Westbank, BC.  He loved retired life - volunteering at his local church in several capacities, golfing with friends and family, and traveling extensively including annual “snowbird” trips down to Arizona. His most memorable vacation was to Hawaii in 1998 when they took all of their children and grandchildren.

He loved the Saskatchewan Roughriders being a long-time season ticket holder as well as attending some of the training camps. Glynn enjoyed golfing, fixing things and making various items for his family and others to enjoy - lawn chairs, luggage racks, wine cork boards, recipe boxes, patio lights and jar openers.

Glynn will always be most remembered for his kind, gentle, humble and loving way.

Besides his loving wife, Glynn is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry (Terri-Mae) of Red Deer, Terry (Dorrie) of Sherwood Park, Blair (Sandra) of Regina, and one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Rohrick (Randy) of Calgary. With Glynn’s Welsh heritage, he was “Taid” to seven grandchildren, Dustin (Paula) Owen, Carmen (Scott) Burrows, Paul (Cindy) Owen, Trisha (Jon) Silbernagel, Donovan (Quinn) Owen, Alyssa (Paul) Marsden and Arika (Dan) Carreiro, whom he loved deeply and was there to celebrate all of their life achievements even if he was facing some physical challenges at that time.  He also had thirteen great-grandchildren, Olivia, Kaitlin, McKenna, Ethan, Chloe, Maxwell, Reed, Cole, Gavin, Joshua, Avery, Zoey and Isabel – that he loved and enjoyed very much. He attended many of their activities to encourage and support them.

Glynn is also survived by his brother, Wendell of Saskatoon; sisters, Marlene (Dave) Rusnell of Trail and Shani (Greg) Apland of Yorkton; and sister-in-law, Susan Owen of Calgary, as well as many special and dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Glynn was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Margaret Owen of Yorkton; his brother, Robert Owen of Calgary; sister-in-law, Ruth Owen of Saskatoon and nephew, David Owen of Edmonton.
