I was very privileged to know my dear Phyllis. I first met her in 1968 when she was my examiner for the Beauticians Certificate of Proficiency and later became a good friend when she was active in the Hair Guild of Calgary. Phyllis was also active in approaching the Provincial Government in trying to have our industry more noticed and regulated. Being the close friend Phyllis was over many years she gave me much advice in running a business and furthering my education. It was Phyllis who encouraged me to become a member of the Judges Panel of Canada and enter hair styling competitions. In my last few years of being a hairdresser, before I retired, I was very privileged to work along her side. Phyllis was very special to me and our industry and will be very missed.

I was privileged to get to know Phyllis as a feisty yet pleasant, intelligent and always positive hair style professional who had risen to the top of her profession, still working in her 10th decade. She would still walk on her own to meet in my Beltline office. I recall her devotion to family and career. I admire her example of active, positive living in advanced years. My condolences to her family.

Dear Myra and Doug and Family
My deep condolences on the loss of your wonderful Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.
What an amazing life she had and how active she was in her profession and caring for her family and friends and clients.
She was a true inspiration to many. May your many memories keep her spirit alive to you all.

My stepmother, Kathleen (Kay) Snow, nee Allen, was a client of Mrs. Holgate for upwards of thirty-five years. When her appointment was done, I used to cross 17 Avenue SW to walk home with Kay. Even as an early teen, I was very impressed with the salon. Mrs.Holgate was a ray of sunshine, and her wit was legendary. Kay was fond of saying that, on the wedding day, when she told Mrs. Holgate to "do me up extra special, as I am marrying [at 45} at six o'clock," Mrs. Holgate dropped the comb and exclaimed, "I thought you had more sense!" (Fortunately she liked my father and me.) A fine life.
We had the great privilege of living on the same floor as Phyllis in the Rosewood for a number of years and always marveled at the energy and tenacity of this wonderful friendly lady who still coifed the hair of her many faithful customers till the age of 99. We thought of her many times since we moved and just today saw her obituary in the paper. A great lady is gone but her legacy will live on. Condolences to her family.
Rest in peace Phyllis. Dick and Elaine Brown

My condolences to the family. My mom Joan Clark had standing Saturday appointments with Miss Phyllis for many years. I have fond memories of going to pick her up at the salon in the house on 17th Ave when I was little. Everyone was always very friendly but Phyllis always took time to chat to me. In my mom's later years, Phyllis would offer to come to her. Mom always enjoyed time spent with Phyllis and the team.
Marnie and I remember Phyllis working in the hair salon. Even in her 90s, she treated her clients gently and with kindness as she administered massages while waiting for the next process. She was always interested in what others were doing and would begin a conversation with all clients. In her 90s, it was amazing to us that she learned how to use the computer system when Doug was away. Phyllis will certainly be missed. Doug, we are thinking of you at this time and sending our sincere condolences.
